Hey all, I'm swinging through Oregon this weekend. What are The Places To Hit in Portland/Eugene for some rockin' gear? Nothing in particular, just window shopping. Thanks in advance.

Kenny, As far as vintage shops go my faves are Guitar Crazy in Portland and McKensie River Music in Eugene. Owners are respectively Bob Stahl and Bob November, both great guys. Both shops have websites to check out their inventory before going in. Good Luck. If you need any other directions, site-seeing, restaurant recommendations write me. Another good one that I really enjoy is Old Town Music on 3rd a block south of Burnside in Portland. Nice guys there and some good used gear.

Pioneer Music downtown Portland at s.w. 9th and Taylor. K.C.Wait owner and player. Excellent selection of new and vintage instruments.

GuitarCrazy no longer has a store front as far as I know. I was in Pioneer last week (I mainly shop for mandolins there) I think he had one old Gibson, a ton of new Taylors and Martins and a few Collings. Pioneer is mostly acoustic.

Portland Music on the east side of the river has a nice "collection" (not for sale) as does Apple Row.

Old Town is a quirky little shop. A few interesting old guitars and a lot of small old amps. Some days you can hit the jackpot there.

I can also vouch for Pioneer Music. I bought a used Taylor there some years back. And remember - no sales tax in Oregon. For a CA boy such as yourself, that's a big discount right there.

But if you're going to be in Portland, remember that nothing goes with rock and roll like a cold beer (or several), and Portland has some great breweries. Try a few - I've always been partial to Bridgeport, but you won't be without choices.

If you'll be up here on a wednesday night, drop by Duff's Garage on 7th two blocks south of Hawthorne for a great blues jam. Suburban Slim's band opens, then he invites friends up to play the other 3 sets. I'm down there every wednesday myself, sometimes with my RIC bass and sometimes with my RIC 230. Starts at 9:30pm. There are other acts there on other nights, but wednesday is the jam night. Hope to see you there if you can make it!

Forgot to mention that Duff's is on the eastside...not the westside.
