I won this 4003s:

To me, this is the closest I'm ever gonna get to a v63. Plus, I don't have to worry about refinishing it... Do I?
This model isn't something spectacularly rare is it? Neck-thru, skunk stripe, R-O-S?
I think I have the best of all worlds in a 4003s. I envision this bass refinshed in white. Any concerns anyone have?
Thanks!

Yes, you got me by $10 on that one. It is unusual in that it has a 3 piece neck blank. I am guessing that it is a transitional piece, a factory experiment, or it was built specifically for someone. The neck slab is tapered like other 4003s so it probably did not start off as a 4001 - which has a straight (rectangular) neck slab. The dark fingerboard is quite nice too. R-o-S is a deluxe feature but it does appear occasionally on non-deluxe instruments. If you should decide that you don't like it, please let me know.

Just out of curiosity, what was your max bid? I had considered $925 but opted for less. Would that have changed the outcome?

Ted - Yes, your bid would've changed the outcome. Only cuz I wouldn't have had time to place another bid. I bid $900, but would have been willing to go to $950.
Thank goodness you didn't say, "Oh man! You got RIPPED!" =)
So... Would I be destroying it with a refinish?
Jeff - HA!

That would look great refinished in non-yellowing white. It would be kind of a shame to hide the skunk stripe and the grain though. I have always wanted a white on white Ric and have often thought about a translucent type white where the grain would still be visible.....that would be the best of both worlds IMO.
BTW....Nice 's' model, enjoy!

I'm also interested to see if it has the flat, folded truss rods, or the newer ones.
I'm hoping for the newer ones. I already have a 4003 with the old ones.

Maybe I can refinish it in white and leave a "burst" on the back to show the skunk stripe! =)

It is probably one of a kind. I would leave it alone.

I figured you'd say that... Dang it.
Well, it's GONNA get some reversable mods... Toaster and a Sergio/Jared Slipper! Oh yeah, and some allen-head saddle screws.
I guess this means I'll have to keep my '82 4003 project I just refinished in tung oil and paint IT white!

It is a November of '84 bass so the rods should be the new style. I always forget the date but I think the new rods started in September of '84.

That one is stunning, unusual and in excellent shape. My vote is no re-fin. I have a 1987 4003S. It is my favorite. I like my v63, but this one has its own cool sound(and a more comfortable neck) that I think I prefer to the v63s horseshoe. I'd say keep an open mind. Play it a while before you decide to change the pickup.
