4005 On The Way

Well guys I did it. Just purchased a '66' Mapleglo 4005 from the Bass Emporium. It's a little rough but still pretty good for the price. Someone had at one time replaced both pickups with a jazz at the rear and P in the front. The Rick toasters are now in place,(I'm assuming they are reissues), but because of the routes involved had to cover them with white pickguard type material. Dosn't look too bad. Dosn't have the clear finger rest or holes in the pickguard so I'm assuming it's not original. Later type truss rod cover also. John assured me the neck route in the front wasn't very deep and in no way affected the neck joint stability. As we all know these basses are so rare, to find a 66 in decent condition with straight neck and good playability is really what counts. Original hard shell case also. He's already taken it off his site. No more pics available. I'll post some pics once it arrives.

A 4005 in any condition is worthy of a Wow.
Congrats, mate.

So John at BE sold it ehh. He called me over to his shop(I live right behind Bass Emporium)'cause I'm a Ric fan, to show me the 4005 he'd bought. He wanted to keep it but was unsure about getting it back to original. This is the bass I posted about a few months back. Bass plays great and has original silver case. The neck is beautiful!
Here's a shot.
PS: You're lucky it's not lefty

Thanks everyone. I owned a '67' Mapleglo 4005 about 8 years ago and sold it. I always wished that I hadn't since then. This one just popped up at a very reasonable price concidering a few small issues. He just posted it on his website within the last day. John at BE told me that he was told this bass may have once belonged to Nick St Nick of Steppenwolf. Who knows if it's true or not. As long as the neck is straight, it plays well, and the sound is there, I'm a happy camper.

Congrats on becoming a member of the (clearing throat) "4005 Elite Club"! Now you have no choice but to make it to the RIC Confluence planned for this May in Columbus, Ohio.
Maybe we need a "Pictures of your 4005 series basses" thread.

Welcome back to the 4005 club...and especially to the F chapter...mine is a 66 born in april (FD 1218)....and, of course, as a bonus, you're also now a member of the larger but still pretty damn cool Checkerboard Binding Association!
Mine also once was routed and had the pups replaced (but with barts)and then toasters re-added...without TOO much damage. I did have to add small, black, rubber surrounds to make it look close to right.
On a previously owned and altered 4005 note...A couple of years ago Steve @ the Dude Pit turned me on to a guy in Nashville that had a mg 4005 that was owned by the bass player for "It's a Beautiful Day"....I use to have some pics of it...someone had put gibson eb3 bridge pups in it and it had a leather tooled covered pickguard...the fretboard had also been changed and instead of sharktooth inlays it had inlays of the moon, stars, saturn, the sun ect...it's still out there somewhere, a pretty cool looking celebrity altered 4005....dm
