New 21 Fretter On The Block

Wel, I'm about to become the proud owner of another 21 fret 4001. Made in August '70. Fairly similar to my November '70 one.
The bad news: stripped in the late '70s (originally FG); handrest, fingergrip and switch cap missing; nut not original; treble pickup dead, bass pickup kinda weak; lower section of pickguard cracked; G string tuner is coming apart; mute pad gone; case not original.
The good news: neck is straight and frets are okay; bass refinished in clear lacquer to a fairly high standard; only a few scratches, no dings; original TRC in nearly mint condition.
Owner has not decided on a price yet.
More news this coming saturday. Yeah!

A 21-fret 4001 in any condition is worthy of a Wow.
Congrats, mate.

Good luck on that one! Given it's condition I hope you get it reasonably cheap.

I know I do.
Seriously, I'm sure I'll get the 4001 for a fair price, even more so as the owner is aware that new Rick pickups will be required for replacing the defective original ones on the bass, and that they don't come cheap...

Thanks, Paul. I'll go and pick the 4001 tomorrow afternoon.
As for trading in my StingRay, the guy isn't interested as he has an '80s one himself. His other bass guitars include an '80s Höfner, an SD Curlee, and a 5-string Tobias.

Good score Sergio....That's a rare find in your part of the world. I look forward to seeing it. Still on the 21 fret theme, someone posted a real nice F/G 71 example over at the Dudepit a few days ago...Anyone here know who that is?

Thanks, Andrew.
'Nyswonger'. Maybe that's the other guy in this Forum who owns a 21 fret Fireglo 4001. Gene, is it you?

I am sure it will be brought right back to life once you do some surgery on it Sergio! Shame about the fireglo though. Is that Jim I can hear sobbing ? What about some before and after pics ?

Thanks for the sympathy Kieth, I'm delighted that this wonderful older Ric has gone to Sergio. Not only will he take great care of it but it'll be return to a condition close to it's former glory !!!!
Meantimes Shaun and Jaymi are holding a pair of 4000's hostage !!!!

"Nyswonger" is Bob Nyswonger, probably best known for his work with Psychodots and The Bears (with guitar god Adrian Belew). He's a terrific player, but I haven't heard of him playing the 4001 - he mostly sticks to a Fender and Clevinger upright bass. On the Bears last studio album "Car Cought Fire" there's a great band shot of the guys with three Ricks. If you like smart pop, I highly recommend either of Bob's bands.
