What year did Ric start using conversion varnish for the final finish? What did they use prior to that?

Ping - this has got to be an easy one for Team-Ric.

1958 marked the change from nitrocelulose to conversion varnish. (Didn't I just say that in another thread somewhere?)

Ping. Is there an echo in here? Perhaps two?

Thanks John.

Paul, operator error, as usual.

I will admit, I am a little confused with exactly what conversion varnish is. I will search the archives to refresh.

Would you give me a tip on a small repair. I want to repair two side-by-side nicks on the end of the upper bout slightly to the bottom right of the strap button (Fireglo, late 360). One nick has a small dot of wood showing. Can I fill it and sand to blend and if so what should I use.

Thanks as always.

Fireglo...A tough one. You can fill and level the varnish easily, but touching up the FG will prove to be nigh impossible if it's nicked through to the wood.

Mine was certainley not a professinal repair but it worked for me. I had a nasty nick on the bottom of my 95 Fireglow 330. It was down to the bare wood on the lower bout of the guitar on an edge. I matched the color very well going thru my kid's crayon collection. I colored in the nick. I them flowed polyurethane into the are using small drops off a matchstick, drying in between. It gotta was almost undetectable after that.

It's amazing what you can do with crayons. Nail polish is great for touching up gtrs too & it smells better than crayons!
