Paul Boyer (Bassduke) was in the neighborhood and stopped in visit and to discuss a project. Of course he brought some of his favorite basses along for the ride.
Here is his one-of-a-kind Hofner. Very pretty.........
Then he tried some of mine........

Those photos of the 4002 Walnut and the 4001 Autumnglo really show the difference in the finish nicely.

Oh yeah. I did not notice that. The matte really shows up at that angle.

This is the bass we were discussing. Chemical paint stripping back in the 70's damaged the binding and inlays. The checkerboard is intact but the white binding on the body and neck are damaged and will be replaced. You all will be seeing more of this project in a few months. I have a few to complete before I can start this one. It is a '72 with MOP.

Beautiful (early) 1972 4001. Actually, except for the 'skunk' stripe, the parallel-running knobs and the missing bridge

it looks a lot like the August 1970 21 fret 4001 I picked up yesterday.

The serial number puts it at December of '72. I was surprised by that. There is a pencil number "1" under the finish in the truss pocket. Could that be Dale Fortune's daily numbering?

Hmm... 1st version Grover tuners and a fingergrip on a December '72 4001? Plus, the handrest & treble pu surround on it look new, in contrast with the toaster pickup cover... On my first 4001, a December 72 in Fireglo, the treble pu surround had sharp, not round corners. Hmm...

The surround and treble pickup are the current versions. The original pickup is long gone.

Ah.. 72 4001s...

That's one gorgeous bass! Somebody better make her sparkle again, 72's are entirely unique!

My Dec 72 looks similar after being stripped back in the day. Oversize tuners on mine and it never had a fingergrip.
Hats off to Ted again for undertaking another "project"...

I won't be able to do much until I get my current projects done. John and Marty have been waiting a while for theirs.
