Man, I put my '78 3001 MG up on E-bay a couple of years ago and didn't get one bite at a starting bid of $450. How times have changed. Of course now I'm glad it didn't sell!

If these prices stay like this I'm gonna put MY '78 3001 Walnut up for a starting bid of $750!

I'd like one of those, but I wouldn't pay more than $450 to $500 for one in nice condition.
As long as people will pay whatever the price is marked, no matter how high, because... "they just gotta have it!!"
Soon you'll be seeing ads like for one at that price even if it got run over by a bus.

When you look at these and consider the era, they are marketed squarely at the P-bass IMO. Bolt neck, 20 fret, one single coil, big scratch guard, traditional body shape. Except what are the controls, are they active? If that body is maple, I'll bet it's a tank. For the money, I'll stick with a Fender for this job.

I agree somewhat with your Fender comparison, I believe that was the intended demo but I feel that the 3001 has a bit more growl. You can get close to a 4001 in terms of tone. I'd dare say that build quality was more consistent at RIC in the mid-70s than at Fender. From my understanding, there are some stellar mid-70s P Basses out there, but many that leave a little something to be desired.
Like Ricks, prices on the 70s Fenders have shot through the roof recently...
