Someone on Talkbass just told me my 4003 is a 4003S.
It has no binding, dot fretboard inlays and a sunburst finish. But it says "4003" on the headstock plastic.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Are there any pics of one here somewhere?
I'd post a badly-focused pic of mine if I knew how.

Yep, 4003S. I have exactly the same thing. I love it. I prefer no binding and dot inlay myself, The only change I've made on mine is I put on vintage knobs; I may one day put in a toaster and horseshoe (sans cover!) so that it's closer in sound to my CS4001.

I used to own a Mapleglo 4003S myself. If was a nice bass and I wish I'd never sold it! (sniff)
I really love the fireglo finish w/o binding.
Don't think there were that terribly many 4003S models made...you only see them every now and then.

Nearly posted a pic but couldn't get it down to 15k without it being thumbnail size and black and white!

Mark,
That looks like an Autumnglo (or Walnut) finish. Very cool! What year is it?

Walnut gives it a totally different look! I like! My bass likes your bass... (fireglo 4003S)

I think it was made in April 1982 (serial number starts with VD).
Glad you like it, pity I didn't and STRIPPED ALL THE VARNISH OFF!! Starting to wish I hadn't now...
What you can't see is that the varnish was cracked all over, and there were bare areas on the back.
The wood looked so nice underneath that I'm giving it a more 'natural' finish. Hopefully you will all forgive me when you see the finished product!
