Baffled Ric Higher-ups?

I don't think the staff of RIC is scrambling to find out info about this one.
And with all of the (great) pictures, why not one of the jackplate? I don't know, it looks like a good ol' one to me. Opinions?

So it's a 60's style 4001 with the binding shaved off and a coat of mustard applied as a finish. What is there to research? What is so unusual that JH himself would be scratching his head? I'll take "Stupid Seller Tricks" for 50, Alex.....

The thing that I find interesting is the routing. You can't route the edge of the bass that close to the neck with the wings on. Those wings had to be off when that was routed or re-routed.

Damn fine observation there Daniel. I did not catch that. So it was either made that way or someone did some major surgery on that bass.

There are a lot of chips in the edges of the headstock yet no walnut is showing through.

The routing could be done like that if you got close and them went the rest of the way with some manual tool. Also, note the shape of the headstock which is definitely more '70's looking. The final clue should be the skewed mounting of the "D" tuner. Looks like this had Grovers once that were changed to the Scallers which wont fit correctly unless you remove part of it or tilt it. No Grover tuners in the 60's therefor, given the fret marker shape this bass must be a '70-'72.

Could it be "rounded off" because it didn't come from Rickenbacker like that, isn't original finish, and isn't so rare after all Mr. seller guy?"
I agree with Dane on the headstock shape, but its hard to tell from the angle of all the photos.

I agree ... I think it is a modified 70-72 bass ... the color is the rare baby-feces-glo ... or the change-my-diaper-glo ...
