Which Pickups Should I Get For My 4003?

I need to replace the pickups in my'82 4003. The ones in there now are dead sounding and kinda farty sounding too.

Should I get the toasters or standard pickups? I'd like which ever one is going to give me a nice full tone.

I have tried many pickups in many ric basses ... In my opinion for a 4003 bass you just can't do better than the 4003 single coil high gains wound to 11k ohms ... the pickups are well balanced to the bass ...

I second high gains also although your original pickups were probably around 7.5K and sounded different than the new ones do. You can find good 70's early 80's high gains on ebay here and there.

I prefer toasters and horseshoes, but they're all good....except the dead, farty-sounding ones of course Image

Go for a hi-gain in the bridge, and a toaster in the neck.

Can't go wrong. Image

Thanks. Where's the best place to buy those single coil, high gains (11k)?

4003 high gain in the bridge, HB1 humbucker for the neck position. I love the sound of the HB1's in my 3000's but Marc Seligman did this in a 4001 and says it gave a wide variety of tones.

You can get new high gains at any Ric dealer, they'll order them for you. Many of us here use ricsrus.com (Mike Parks) or pic o the rics. Chris Cleighton)
