4001S fretless with a set neck?

Hmmm. I'm no expert, but I remember reading that the set neck, mono 4001's were made in the early to mid 70's. Of course, the jack plate is clearly shown in one of the pix, so it shouldn't be hard to research.

Maybe one of the Halls can conform or deny this one's veracity?

Fretless Macca, that's all I can say...The fretboard is correct... Could have been a special order.

Then...why does it have 1/2" spacing and a pickguard that goes all the way to the bridge pickup?

It looks like a bad refin as well. The text should read "Nothing hasn't been changed since it's manufacture in January of 1982."

The truss rod cover looks like it's been replaced, the neck looks like it may have been refinished also.

Looks just like my MG'84 4001S setneck.

I sent the seller an email asking about the apparent refin and the obvious pickguard change. Has anyone here ever seen a factory fretless 4001S before?

Never even seen an S fretless, period!

i guess if you wanted a fretless in an s model this is what you got,there cant be many out there.question could this be the B model we hear about before the v63? even more rare if so.

I'm pretty sure the B series bass came with toaster and ROS.

b series would explain the pickguard and i dont think it came with a toaster because i know it didnt come with a horseshoe i remember looking at one back then at washington music[chucklevins]i remember thinking it was not even close to a vintage 4001s.i dont think the repo toester was even out yet the first one i saw was in a v63.

Model 4003SB

This model is the forrunner to the Model 4001V63. The Model 4003SB has stereo (two outputs) instead of the mono output as on Model 4001V63. The headstock is shorter compared to the 4001V63 headstock.A hi-gain treble pickup rather than horseshoe pickup as on the 4001V63. Toaster neck pickup (bass), same dots , same newer control knobs (black vintage knobs), 4003 bridge (two extra back screws) instead of the 4001V63 vintage bridge. Available in MG.

The B series 4003 had 1" neck pickup spacing and smaller (i.e. 4003) pickguard. There's a pic in the Smith book (p.164). It looks like a 1982 Mapleglo 4003S with a toaster neck pickup.

This bass is not a B. It has a set neck with a stripe. The B was based on the 4003S which had neither of those attributes.
