A question of ohms?????

I have a Peavey classic 30 tube amp,it's rated power&load is 30 watts RMS into 16 or 8 ohms.It has a 12 inch 16 ohm speaker.and an ext speaker jack that says minimum total impedance is 16 ohms.Does this mean that I can't use my 4-12, 8 ohm speaker cab with it? Any ibfo will be greatly appriciated.

Hi Paul,
that's very interesting... according to the Peavey User Manual for your amp (I'm an Authorized Warranty Service person for Peavey products) you may ONLY use a 16 Ohm ext. speaker. Not 8, Not 4 Ohms. This is because that jack is wired in parallel with the internal speaker and anything less than 16 Ohms will reduce the load below 8 Ohms. The words "minimum total" refer to what can be plugged into that jack.
If you disconnect the internal speaker you can use the 412 because the amp is good into 8 Ohms. To disconnect the speaker, you can disconnect the spade lugs from the back of the speaker. Mark the positive before you disconnect it on both the speaker and the wire so you can restore it correctly. Cover the positive wire's termination with tape to insulate it so it won't accidentally ground out.
Then you can plug your 412 into the ext. spkr. jack. This is the ONLY way you can safely use that 412 cab.

Thanks very much for the info I really appriciate it.All that ohm stuff can be very confusing,but disconnecting the speaker will be no problem at all,and that amp should sound really good with the 4-12's.THANK AGAIN,

I have a shop here in Santa Fe where i repair electronic musical equipment (everything except home audio stuff), restore, custom build and modify amps.
i'm Authorized by Mesa, Fender, Marshall, Peavey and Crate.

well, I have been trying to find a quite smaller good quality cabinet for my 60s solid state Vox amp....Super Foundation Bass 200W..the original cabinet is 6ft tall and very heavy to carry out of home...the problem is the 15ohms impedance. It seems there are no 15 or 16 ohms carryable cabinets available...well no 16ohms at all

sounds like you'll have to build your own cab, Francesco. there are 16 Ohm speakers available. Or buy an 8 ohm cab and swap the speaker.
