Ok, I know this may catch some heat but, other than RIC basses, I swear by the old Peavey basses made in the '70's. I dare anyone who has not played a Peavey T-40 to try one and put it down without being impressed. I've owned a few of these over the years and just purchased a 1980 T-40 which is in amazingly mint condition. Original owner who couldn't play and stuck it under his bed for all these years. For $240. I was skeptical and asked questions before I bought. Legit. I won't bore anyone with the specifics of this bass but, I can only say if you get an opportunity to play one, you owe it to yourself to. The sound you can get from these basses is phenomenal.

That being said, I would not know anything about the instruments Peavey makes today. These were produced in the USA while Peavey sold out to overseas as most have....except Rickenbacker. I'll post pics of this wonderful bass if anyone has an interest. Of course though, my RIC is first in line.

I've got one, and also like it, they sound great, but are very heavey.

Yep, forgot to mention that, Scott...swamp ash.

My Zon Sonus 5/1 is made from Swamp Ash with a Spalted Maple ( the top is only about 3/16" thick so it doesn't affect the weight much) top and it is very lightweight, about 7 lbs. I know that there are different kinds of Swamp Ash and I do recall playing an old Peavey bass a long time ago; the thing I most remember is how heavy it was!

Beautiful Zon Jeff, is it just the pic or is there a stark contrast of the wood blend from front to back. The wood grain where it goes lighter looks like the grain on my Peavey bass. So am I to assume just the front is Maple?? Believe me, I'm no expert, just observing.

I actually like the weight of the T-40. The neck is very smooth also.

Oh yeah, you explained that...hmmmmm. Sorry. I'll have to check the thickness of my bass. It's a tank!!!

I had a Peavey T-40 when they first came out and to me they had an amazing sound and lots of variety in the tone depending on how you adjusted the pickups and or tone control. I do remember how extremely heavy it was especially after wearing a Hofner and couldnt get past that issue. For the price back than it was a pretty good bass
