Dumpster Bass

I've been thinking about some future projects to do and JH's dumpster bass has been on my mind a lot. I can't seem to find any pics of it. I'm assuming they where in the archive section. Does anyone have some pics to post? I just love that bass.

At Ric it was either the dumpster or do something cool with the bass so they came up with this, I forgot what was wrong with it in the first place.

There was a flaw in the otherwise beautiful maple that made this 4003 it unfit for sale. The wood was so nice that the foreman brought it to JH for review. Rather than throw it in the dumpster, the maple was planed down a bit and a bubinga top was made to cover the flawed wood. A similar cover was made for the headstock but I think that was just for looks. A plant employee (the carver of the LK models) made the bubinga pickguard and TRC as a gift to JH. The result is a stunningly beautiful one off bass that is now part of JH's personal studio. I may have left out a detail or too but those are the basic facts as they were discussed here.

the tapered edges around the bass look similar to the mustard glo bass that sold on ebay not too long ago

The edge carving is sometimes called german shoulders. The model 381 has similar detailing.

By the name dumpster bass you would think JH was digging through the dumpster,but no that would be one of us.

I am told that there is a difference between the edge carving on this bass (and on the model 381) and german carve. The german carve dips below the level of the edge and then back up where this cut does not. So technically it is not a german carve. Also, the nicely crafted pickguard and TRC were provided as nice surprises to JH, not gifts as I misstated above. After all the maker was on the clock at the time.

OK, imagine that bass being semi hollow like the 381 with a RIC cat's eye sound hole. Interesting...
