The city of Liverpool is one of the most well known cities in the world. With its legendary rock stars, colourful citizens and beautiful architecture, Liverpool is truly unique. Located on the northwest side of the River Mersey, Liverpool is a city that began slow in its industrial growth but eventually became one of the world's most important port cities. It came to be known as "The Port of a Thousand Ships" (Mersinct LTD, 1999,1). During the 19th century, the city saw a large increase in its economic state of affairs. The labour force grew to exasperating numbers and cultural and educational life flourished. Liverpool remained isolated from cities such as London but made up for this with major influence from the United States, especially in regards to music. Liverpool is best known as the birthplace of the Beatles who are one of the most successful bands of all time. The Beatles first arrived on the Liverpool music scene in the early 60's creating a huge controversial craze among their fans known as Beatle Mania.
A revolutionary era had begun in Liverpool. There was a formation of new subcultures and along with these came new advances in technology and an increase in cultural exchange. The influence of young people with the prominence of self-expression and rock music were central components of a new wave of thinking. These all created the distinctiveness of Liverpool that set it apart from anywhere else. As the 1960's arrived, there became a greater tolerance for new ideas, equal rights issues and individual expression. The demand for music became far greater than the ability to supply it. However, in the 1960's and 1970's there was a national economic decline that caused unemployment and resentment among many of the citizens throughout the Country. These are some of the components that may have lead to the increased crime in the 1960's. Along with such factors as the greater visibility of youth and youth permissiveness there was less censored media. Women were now working outside the home and divorce rates were higher which in turn caused more broken homes then before (Adelson, 1991,1).
The atmosphere surrounding Liverpool in the 1960's was one of vibrant nightlife. The country had recovered from the war and the 1960's were a prosperous time for England. The 1950's were a very conservative time and held a mature image. That had changed in the 1960s, which brought about an emphasis of self-expression and this was especially true with regards to music. During the sixties, several riots took place, resulting in further rebellion against the constraints society placed on its people. People became enlightened by music and the ability to express oneself through music was liberated. Much of the music produced was a response to what people did not like in society at the time.
