- I got this back in 2000 from Musicground in Leeds and it played way better than all the rest of the Rics that I tried out. Whenever I let anyone play it (rarely) they say how much better than other Rics it plays… When I got it, it was in a sorry state of affairs and had been stripped back to the wood by the previous owner and was sporting a jazz pick up in the treble posision.
I played it like that for around a year whilst finding out about its history and discovered that it was once a white bass (traces of colour in the cavities) and so I took it off the raod and had it stripped to the wood, hardware off and renovated by Brian Eastwood (the best vintage guitar re-finsher in the northwest). I also acquired a 1975 treble pick up, had it fitted and re-wired.
It had already had the Ric tuning pegs replaced with Grovers and has recently had the superb Hipshot direct replacement brass tailpiece fitted. I still have the original tailpiece for history's sake (included in the sale) but you would not swap the two for playability - the sustain is massively better with the hipshot. The pic guard is a replacement too as the other was cracked. Lastly, it has schaller locking strap buttons fitted (for which strap locks will be included in the sale).
