This JetGlo (black) Rickenbacker 4001 left the US factory in September 1975 and was purchased at Long & McQuade, Toronto, Canada in November of that year by its current and sole owner.
It has preformed thousands of gigs and studio sessions from the rock bars of Yonge St to the Ontario Place Forum to Madison Square Garden. A stock 4001 has a great look. An amazing neck. An unmistakable sound. But to cut it in the high stakes grind of the ‘70s, ‘80s and '90s – it needed to be best it could be.
Pro Mods
So upgrades were made between 1976 and 1979 to improve the ease of performance and the quality of sound without changing its unique ‘Ricky’ character.
Starting at the top:
• Stock tuners were replaced with Schaler semi-covered machine heads, to allow for precise and stable tuning
• The plastic nut at the top of the fingerboard was upgraded to custom-crafted solid brass, that increased string resonance
• StrapLoks were added to secure the instrument and the player – for live and studio performance
• Initially, a DeArmond pickup from the original ‘60s Rickenbacker replaced the stock neck pickup – then a new custom-wound pickup with even hotter ouput was inserted
• The original bridge pickup was also re-wound to match the new neck pickup – increasing the overall gain without resorting to active pickups – the better to drive fx pedals and amplifier pre-amps
• A Badass II bridge was fitted onto a solid brass plate and then mounted in place of the original bridge to give string tension, height and intonation micro-adjustment capabilities
