Fattest Neck 4001/4003?

Post by CircleOfCrows »

What year(s) 4003's have the thickest necks? I have an '03 Montezuma that has a much thicker neck than most I have tried/played-Looking for a second.
Would be open to 4000/4001's as well.

I always try to "try before I buy" but Rickenbackers ain't common here sadly.

The '03 would be among the thickest.

Generally, 60's: super thin
70's-80's usually very thin
about 92-01: pretty thick
02-07: even thicker
08 on: better, but still not as thin as vintage.

I'm sure the experts can come in and adjust my era marker dates to be more precise.

My early/mid 73 was a C profile. Not very wise side to side but thick, front to back. One of the most stable necks on any Rickenbacker I owned.

My 2013 is chunky compared to what I played from '11 and '12, but good chunky if that makes sense.

Makes picking up any other bass feel like a cheap toy - gives the instrument a fantastically substantial feel.

My '81 4002 is very chunky, with a thick ebony board and a 7 1/2 inch crown radius.

I forgot that 4002's do seem to be thicker than others, in my limited experience.

My son's '86 4003S has the thickest Ric neck I have played. personally I love thick necks - the thicker the better, sound-wise, IME.

My '00 V63 has by far the chunkiest neck of the herd - the others are early '70s basses with some variation, but nothing close to the V63.

Seems to be a case of try before you buy and some variance. Oh well! Will keep my eyes peeled. Would love a 4002, they just don't come up any too often! Cheers for the prompt replies guys!

A forum member has one for sale for a very decent price. Have a look in the classified section.

Same here. That baby is STABLE and a good candidate for a conversion to 8-string.

For me, the 04-05 years were the thickest I've ever owned.

My 98 4003 is substantially chunkier than my 88 4003 - but both are great to play!
