4001 bridge pup ?

Post by kojakcurtis »

So I'm putting my '74 4001 back to stock, but forgot which way the bridge pup faces. Does the cut out in the magnet for the wire face towards the neck or the bridge?

I'm in the same boat. Are there any places other than Joey Vasco's Bassnotes site that show the correct way to wire a Ric? With pics?
Here is where I hide my music:

Look at the top of the bobbin. You will notice that the end poles (E and G) are spaced differently from their respective ends of the bobbin plate. The E pole is closer to its end of the bobbin than the G to its end of the bobbin. It is a subtle difference but significant. You could use a caliper or ruler to measure the gaps.

This pic should help. The E line is shorter than the G line.

The distance is exactly the same on my pickup.

The bobbin plates were shaped by hand so some have a less obvious difference. The E above is 1/16" closer to the end than is the G.

Ok, try this. There is probably a notch cut in one side of the magnet. That notch allows one of the coil leads to pass to the base plate. That notch goes toward the tailpiece.
