Looking for a 81/82/83 330 JG

Post by egosheep »

Hi, I want to buy my first Ric, and I would really like to get one in this range, but i realize that may be difficult. My inspiration to get one is primarily Johnny Marr from the smiths, His is an 82 or 83. What I like is how the lower horn has a softer contour, the headstock is slim and it has klusons. I want a 330 like it, in the same way people want a 325c58 with a bigsby, etc.

you can see it at http://www.jmarr.com/johnny-marr/images ... er-330.jpg
and here:

I have seen a few posts here, in passing, about luthiers who can make a newer ric cosmetically more like an old one. The lower horn I could live with, my main concern would be the headstock shape. I know that they are making the slim headstocks again, but I don't really want to wait.

this one caught my eye, but I don't want to make a mistake. I don't mind waiting to modify it, but is it even feasible? Or does anyone know where an early 80's JG is for sale?

Any advice would be appreciated.

A quick check of the Register shows not many early 80's 330s in Jetglo -- like a total of 5 for 1980-84. No pics for any of them. I think you are going to have a tough time finding a 330 JG mfg'd in the late 70s, early 80s. The ones you find from the mid-late 80's will likely have black trim.

Here's something on GBase that might be of interest -- it's a 330, undated, appears to have black plastic and probably black trim, but hard to tell from the photos. Price is right.

Good luck!

If I were you, I'd keep a watch on ebay for a newer one. That way you'll likely get one that works and it won't have any of the hidden problems that 30-year-old guitars can have.

There are some AMAZING deals on ebay for 330s. There was one in FG, 2006 build, that sold for $950 or thereabouts within the last 2 weeks. You could probably snag a recent JG 330 for $1200 or less just by keeping an eye out.

You might also try posting your "Rick Wanted" request on the thread "Rickenbacker Marketplace - Rickenbacker Wanted." This will get you more attention and perhaps someone here has one they would be willing to sell.

Good luck!
