New bass day! Gibson semi-hollow content....

Post by loendmaestro »

I've had this on order since November & it finally showed up last Friday. It's the Limited Edition Gibson Midtown Standard bass. A modern take on the old EB-2D. Actually a chambered mahogany body with a solid core & a maple top. It sounds absolutely amazing. Seriously good. I believe Ronn Roberts has a matching lefty as well.
I know it's not a Rickenbacker, but I am in love with this thing....

That is a great looking bass IMO Chris. I always love the shape of an ES 335. Does it sound like an EB-3 Gibson or is it very different?

Pretty different. VERY clear & defined. Also, it's a 34" scale as opposed to the short scale EB3. No mudbucker....that neck pickup is actually a TB plus. It has an amazing rich & powerful tone with booming lows & zingy highs.
I am so in love with this bass right now it's not even funny...

wow, I used to have one just like it but a 1966 EB-2, it sounded like "To Sir With Love". And it was hard to play. Sold it to one of ABBA's bass players in Norway :D

curiously, Gibson has gone thru at least 2 cutaway designs in the 335 body, the original cutaways were fatter, then the second design became thinner, and now, it looks more like a Yamaha cutaway.

That's a sweet looking bass Chris. Hope to try one locally.

I have a 1966 Gibson EB-2, which is my main gigging bass in my Americana band. I replaced the mudbucker with a Curtis Novak EB-AA. I really love this bass. I really dig it that Gibson released an updated hollow body bass of a classic design (hint hint)

Thanks for the photo spread too Chris. It looks like a keeper. :)

I am madly in love with mine. I hate when I have to play another bass.

No neck-dive, strap attaches at top horn not at heel as on most hollowbodies.
Here's a side-by-side with my EB-2:
