Transitional 70's 4001 Features

Right you are Johnallq http://archives.rickresource.com/clipart/happy.gif

Dale, sorry I meant to say horseshoe baseplates. I see from the black horseshoe thread that they're also made of aluminum, and are rectangular rather than hexagonal shaped. Way back when, I replaced my 4001's plastic ...

Hmm.. I just looked at the 4002 schematic and it's a wierd setup. The tone control is a high pass filter at one end and a low pass filter at the other end. With the pot at the middle, it would be a fairly flat frequency output, but I would expect there would be a slight volume loss with it. The ...

350K would be a non-standard value. Use this chart:

http://archives.rickresource.com/oldattachments/133095.jpg

So Dave's resistors are 560K.

A 250K cap usually means 25pF with a 10% tolerence, but it depends on the manufacturer. The 3rd number is the mulitplier, but some use it to ...

Rich,
I forgot the details of how a stock Dakota sounds since I modded the **** out of mine, but I'm getting another one in a couple of weeks. If you can wait that long, I'll try to do a thorough sonic evaluation, and possibly record it. The neck is wide and fat, if that is what you like. You can ...

The Phillips screws have dimples (dots) on the heads, which indicates Japanese origin.

Dave, the tone is essentially the same, but a bit cleaner sounding with a bit more treble. Just using one coil sounded good, if you want to deal with ac hum. I just thought of something: I have a spare Q-filter, so I will put the Rickbucker back in the neck position and experiment. A q-filter is an ...

Jeff, the Dakota threw me off too when I first played it. Very meaty and not much high end as compared to other guitars that I have. I figured it was mostly the pickups, and it is. They remind me of a EMG85, more bass than treble. I tried wiring them in parallel (they have 4-conductor cable) and ...

I can't comment on the pickups since I replaced them; they're a little too brown for the type of music we play. But a maple neck-thru is gonna sound like maple, regardless of the wing wood.
The note's fundamental is dominant, not too many overtones and heavily distorted chords ring with clarity and ...

Peter,
Yes, it bends toward the floor, as well as being
twisted. I took more pictures and uploaded them,
but the stupid camera didn't want to focus where
I wanted it to. They're still clear enough to see
the bend, and especially the twist, if you compare
the nut to the body.

Speaking of knots, I have a 4003 where the neck is bent *sideways* due to a change in grain direction. The bass is useless, apart from hanging on the wall as decoration. Here are some pictures of that part of the neck:
