I very much like the fact that Ric is so protective of its brand. As a consumer, I like knowing that the company is spending what I'm sure is no small amount on defending its brand in the courts (if necessary). For that reason, I would never even pick up a knock-off, no matter how enticing the price ...

They are indeed powerful and brimming with toneful goodness, Steve. Mine is one of the "heavy" ones (22 lbs) that I bought from a dealer who was clearing them out to make room for the new lighter weight line.

Assuming your Ampeg is 8 ohms, I think you'll hear a huge difference when you add a ...

Not an LMK, but I bought a Markbass S450 a couple of years ago and am very pleased with it. Great amp at a great price. The EQ has a wide usable range which allows you to pull just about any Rick tone you like. I use it with a Bag End 15" alone for small gigs, adding an EA VL-210 for larger gigs.

I haven't posted much here, but I lurk occasionally and have learned a lot from the experts here.

Decided to jump in on this thread because I've also played the Fireglo '75 at Capsule and was REALLY impressed with it. I've only got my 77 4001 to compare it against, but that 75 is extremely light ...

+1 on the Mark Bass stuff. I have one of their S450 heads that is about to enter its third year of trouble-free performance and big sound. For small gigs, I use it with a Bag End S15-D and add an EA 2x10" for bigger gigs (my 4001 really sings through the big rig!).

But as portable as the above ...

I'm printing out that great post, Ted. Very helpful for a newbie such as myself. I never knew the bit about lead weights in the neck for a couple of years. So my '77 4001 should have them?

*The difference between our heads could be that yours is completely solid state (I believe) and mine has a tube in the preamp section.*

Could be. I notice the same phenomenon with my Vox Valvetronix guitar amps. They too have a single tube (12AX7), though it functions differently than a standard ...

Hi Ron,

I'd be curious as to your thoughts on the Markbass 4X10. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I use a Bag End 15 and/or EA 2x10 with my S450 head. Both are 8 ohm cabs. But in the endless search for light gear that sounds good, I've been contemplating one of the MB 4x10s to use as a ...

I've been a very happy MarkBass S450 user for about 18 months now and can't say enough good things about it. This was an end-of-line model from 2005, so it's not one of the ultra-lightweight amps they currently produce (mine weighs around 20 lbs, as opposed to 8 lbs for the newer models).

My four ...

Thanks for the responses and suggestions so far. The reason I'd prefer something other than another 4001 is twofold: One is the digging-into-the-wrist problem I mentioned, but I'd also like to get away from the big chrome surround at the bridge pickup. I play back there a lot and found it getting in ...

After 25 years, I'm a reborn Rick guy (gig report

So here's thread number two from the new guy. Some of you may recall that I recently picked up a Mapleglo 4001 in nice shape -- my first Rick since I sold my '73 4001 in 1981 for three magic beans and a hearty handshake. I took it to a well-regarded local shop who did a nice low set-up that included ...

Dang, that Azure 4001 is less than an hour from my place! Having just sprung for the Mapleglo 4001 I talked about in my inaugural post, it'd be tough to find extra cash right now. Still, I'm putting it on my watch list. Maybe I can move an item or two on craigslist to free up some cash. Sure would ...

Wow. Thanks for all the warm welcoming posts. I recognize a name or two from other forums, but I guesss the reason I haven't seen them on those forums is because they hang here all the time now! I can see why.

New Guy Checking In...

Well, as "new" as one can be at 50+ years of age. Anyway, I've been lurking around the last few weeks after recently acquiring a '78 Mapleglo 4001. Was mainly looking for info on the 4001 capacitor mod, but got pulled into a lot of other interesting threads. I must say I like the way this forum ...
