Thanks for all of the compliments! This was an interesting one to get going.
I have to admit that the other jobs I'm doing have kept me from the final bit of wiring, and finally firing this little girl up...though I have gotten some insight into what a transition 4003 bass neck does under tension ...

It's not a really complicated pickup....you could always have it tested and repaired or rewound. This usually costs $50-60 with shipping. I just got a priceless '61 P-bass pickup (for a customer) back from Lindy Fralin in under 3 weeks and he did a marvelous job.

So I finished the bass...

Some may remember me telling about a custom finish project for a customer in Texas. To make a long story short, it's a possible answer to the question of "What if The Fool did a bass for McCartney?" I worked up a few drawings based on personal details of this client's life story and once he agreed ...

A friend who plays primarily high-end long-scale basses can't say enough good things about her two Landing basses-they run approximately $1200 a copy with lots of options.

Also, my wife plays a '98 Dano longhorn reissue as a short-scale ...

I have read that Richard Thompson thought that John Birch may have made the replacement neck for that 360/12 in the pic. He won't say much on his web site about it, though.

I have met Dan Erlewine, and my lutherie mentor has taught repair classes for professionals alongside him, most recently at the last A.S.I.A. symposium in Maryland.

Dan is the real deal in every respect. He has his opinions, of course, but he does his best to promote good solutions to playability ...

A good friend saw McCartney in Seattle during this last tour. Sir Paul played "the" Rickenbacker 4001 for all but four songs, according to Randy. He used the Hofner for the others.

(you Tele-heads will know the aforementioned friend as TeleTubby from the TDPRI.)

Wal basses are beautiful ...

If Paul can't get to it or is otherwise occupied, try Jon Mello in Kensington.(Berkeley area) He is a *very experienced* and careful repairman, and I would trust him with any guitar at all. He took over a lot of Jon Lundberg's clients when Lundberg retired from lutherie.

I saw Peter Buck in Seattle with Robyn Hitchcock in March-he played a jetglo 360 with hi-gains, and a RM sig 370-12 with toasters.

Hm. The problem is only happening on the low "E" pairs?

My first suggestion would be to swap out the strings for another pair-same gauge, and type, if possible.

That can often be the case-strings are not perfect. as for the 6 vs. 12 saddle issue, I decided to keep the 6-saddle on my personal ...

All good advice.

Another thing I can recommend would be purchasing
the book "Guitarmaking: Tradition and Technology" by William R. Cumpiano and Jonathan D. Natelson (paperback ISBN is 0-8118-0640-5)

All the online sellers have it, and it's been in print for many years, so you should have no ...

Vast amounts of tension, actually.

Do you have a competent luthier nearby? That could probably be repaired rather handily with hot hide glue.

I have heard that a British-made WEM Electronics "pep" distortion pedal (probably with a germanium transistor) was used for the fuzz, then straight to the board. I don't remember where I got that info.
A fuzzface set for unity gain might get close, especially with a Fairchild limiter/compressor.

According to the most recent Rolling Stone interview (10/05?), Paul has the Ric as stage backup to the Hofner, along with a spare early 70s Hofner 500/1 as third.

The Ric was supposedly at the Grammys performance in an open case just offstage. He still loves it.
