Wait, how significantly does the 4003 tailpiece change the tone of the 4001, as compared with the 4001 tailpiece?

There were two different 4001 tailpieces (split and non split), each was a little different. Can't say what the difference in tone was though.

The new 4003 tailpieces seems to be ...

Oh I don't use an SWR... I just said I liked playing a few. Currently I use a Trace Elliot combo, but I'm getting ready to sell it (and the Mesa). I'm not using the Trace's preamp, because it's too dull sounding. I have a Yamaha preamp plugged into the effects return. The Yamaha gives me a nice ...

Valve amps are where it's at. Digital effects claim to 'emulate' the tone of classic valve amps...

In my opinion tube amps sound way too mushy for bass. I have a Mesa 400+, all new tubes, etc. If you want a "vintage" sound, it's great, but it's a mushy sound. Recently I played though brand new ...

Yeah, bending the switch leaf usually works.

For contact cleaning... I ran out of "real" contact cleaner one day, and I had a few very dirty sliders on my mixer, from spilling Pepsi in it some years ago. In a pinch I used WD-40! Worked like a charm... even better than the contact cleaner I was ...

I had a Bart on my 4001... but it was an old Bart back when they were called Hi-A pickups. It was in the bridge position. I liked it a lot. It was fuller, but still had a nice bright top end. Doesn't sound like a stock Ric of course, but if you want a replacement pickup, you probably want someone ...

There is not one Pro musician that still plays a Ric but Squire and Lemmy, they need to get back in the running.

OK... I'm way late in this thread... So if I'm repeating someone, my apologies!

But this isn't true at all. Off the top of my head I can think of Franz Ferdinand... their bass ...

I never did try green magic marker on the edges of my CDs. I recently went to an estate sale of a gent who was heavily into classical music, and I'll be darned if every one of the CDs his family had for sale didn't have the green edge.

I've tried it. I can't say I heard any difference at all ...

Hi-gains are a totally different design from the Strat pickups, and part of that is the shape of the coil... Hi-gains are wider aperture pickups. I think it would be hard to get a strat type pickup to sound like a high gain.

Mac and IBM both got lied to and screwed by Bill Gates ...

Yeah, that's why IBM went to Apple with the PowerPC processor. Windows NT was derived from OS/2, VfW had stolen QuickTime code in it, and of course there's the infamous out of court patent infringement settlement where MS paid Apple $150 ...

I was a huge Yes fan back in the day. I think when most people heard Yes for the first time, was also the first time people heard a bass with roundwounds with that bright a sound... and yes, Entwhistle did it first, but it was a different sound. Rush always struck me as a Yes copy... even to the ...

I built five basses with dual truss rods. I used the "Standard welded" rods from Luthier's Mercantile ( http://www.lmii.com/ ).

I used a router to cut the two slots, about 1/2" apart. The rods have a round rod on the bottom, and a square rod on the top. I used a round tipped bit. The top of the ...

... That and every bass having Music Man or Jazz style pickups. Don't get me started with that one!

I'm not referring to copies/clones/fakers... they are not Jazz Basses! - I'm talking about a MIA Fender Jazz - I wouldn't compare anything less.

I don't find anything special about Jazz basses ...
