If you have access to use a Electro-Voice RE-20 mic for the SVT cab, give it a try and see if it works for you...
I had sucess with that mic in recording the SVT 8x10 cab.... It has the punch and low frequency response as well as the pattern to reject the outside noises from bleading...

I would keep the original rods.... I assume the threads are trashed, based on your description of the plate....
When your cut the rods....try to match the lengths as accurately as possible...
Then use a die to make new threads.... I use to know the thread size, memory fading... someone can chip in ...

To answer your question about comparing the CTS alnico speaker to the later 70's ceramic...
The alnico is much warmer...punchier and louder..ALso they have better high end.. Basically the alnico wins in every catagory...

It is mint condition...I had a second one but i sold that... I take them apart and rebuild sections of it for better stability and tighter acuracy of drift....
I use it to set intonation mostly.... I keep it on with a mic plugged into it and just use it to tune up ...

The early SVT 8x10 "flat back" cabs were approximately 1" shorter than the later SVT 8x10 cabs that had the wheels and the handle on the back..
The reason they became taller was to maintain the same air space behind the speakers, since the upper and lower speaker compartments were intruded ...

I wanted to show off my Favorite Bass and favorite Bass Amp.... I spent a lot of time getting this set-up just the way i wanted...

To answer your question... No I haven't done any finish damage as you described.. If it's bent just right...then you have a rise off the body almost towards the middle of the tailpiece, if you can picture that..putting in the screws brings it down flush...So now you have the "pre-load" working in ...
