Axel, no, the edges of the black checkers are sharp and distinct. Now that I look at it again, I can see that Mark is right. There are parts of the binding where the paint was not scraped off up to the edge. It's hard to see the seam under the paint, which is why I was looking for an explanation for ...

Checkered binding on a "Tom Petty"
While changing the strings on my 660-12 "Tom Petty" I noticed that some of the black squares in the checkered binding extended into the colored (fireglo) part of the body.
