Checkered binding on a "Tom Petty"

Post by ricky620 »

While changing the strings on my 660-12 "Tom Petty" I noticed that some of the black squares in the checkered binding extended into the colored (fireglo) part of the body. Apparently the checkered part is not integral to the binding and seems to be a decal or perhaps silkscreened on. Can any Rick-O-Philes out there verify this and say exactly how this was done?

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the deal ...

first when the guitar is being made ,a ledge is cut into the edge for the checkered layer ,then another cutter is used to cut the other ledge for the white layer (actually this is most likely done with one custom made bit that cuts both at the same time ) .At least that is how I have to replicate this .I have a bit that cuts a variety of depth and widths of ledges ...covers all the makers and thicknesses of plastic .

What is then done after the binding is glued on ,it is allowed to harden / dry and then it is sander smooth FLUSH with the sides and the top of the body .

When the guitar goes into the spray booth , it is first sprayed with a sealer coat ,then the binding is taped off and the color coats applied .
After the tints/color is hard ,the tape is removed and the guitars go to an area where very picky women sit with scraper blades and extremely carefully ,clean up the color line to as close to the wood as possible .

Some times this is NOT the exact seam .WHY? because it is not easy to fix the bursting if some one goes into the wood .That color is just laying over the top of the plastic .

John Hall, care to add anything to this ?

By the way ...EVERY guitar maker/ company does it this way .There is NO coloring then applying of binding ...it just is NOT done that way .EVER.
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!

Richard,
do you mean it looks like this:

as if the binding had sort of very slightly melted down into the wood?

Axel, no, the edges of the black checkers are sharp and distinct. Now that I look at it again, I can see that Mark is right. There are parts of the binding where the paint was not scraped off up to the edge. It's hard to see the seam under the paint, which is why I was looking for an explanation for this.
