Re: When is a 330k pot not a 330k pot...
I emailed a UK supplier of part no 07346, the CTS 330k pot with push pull switch, to ask if he could check out the spec of his stock, as I'm looking for a 500k push pull tone pot for my 1975 4001, and don't really want to buy one at 330k or below. He kindly got back to me and said that of his 9 item...

Thank you Dane. I shall have a look for one of these...aceonbass wrote:There isn't one. The CTS pot fits, but I believe it is of poor quality and inadequately spec'd. I use 500K Bourns solid shaft push-pull pots that are 1" deep.

Re: Push/pull pot on 4001
In terms of what can be found (in the UK anyway) that's the tricky bit. Yes, so I'm discovering. Can anyone recommend an appropriate push/pull 500K solid shaft pot that would fit in the 25mm/1" deep cavity of a 1975 4001, and from which seller (not necessarily UK based)? What have other people...

Re: Push/pull pot on 4001
Thanks for the replies guys. Much appreciated. If I were looking to replace the whole harness I wouldn't hesitate to go to Dane Wilder, who certainly knows his stuff. But in my case I'm not looking to pull out all the original parts that are all working fine and producing a wonderful tone, just for ...

Push/pull pot on 4001
HI, Although I often read the informative posts here (and the facebook group) it's a few years since I last posted anything. So here goes with a new question... I've had the .0047uF cap bypassed on my 1975 4001 since I bought it in about 1990. It's a great sounding and versatile instrument. However,...

YES "Beyond and before" - device attached to bass headstock
What is attached to the headstock of Chris Squire's bass? Something to improve sustain or deal with a dead spot perhaps? Or a brace to hold a crack together? I've never noticed anything like that before on his bass. Is he playing a regular deluxe 4001 rather than the RM1999 - I thought I saw binding...

He gets a great tone out of that 4001, even unplugged!

Re: Does anyone use the mute?
I finally (after nearly 25 years!!) got round to putting a new mute pad in my 1975 4001 a few months ago, prompted by watching some Carol Kaye lessons, and I was quite impressed with it. It works well and does get you close to that thick thumpy vintage sound, even with roundwound strings. It's not s...

Re: neck bow/twist of my 4003
I was horrified at the thought of such drastic work being done on my 1975 4001, but afterwards you couldn't even notice that my fretboard had been levelled. What looked like a big problem seemed to require the removal of only a minimal amount of material to get it back in shape. I hope it all goes s...

Re: neck bow/twist of my 4003
On the E side, does it have a bit of a hump about half way along the neck, and then a dip and a bow at the lower frets, or is that just an illusion? If that is the case then it might need more than sorting out the truss rods. My 1975 4001 neck warped so it had a hump centred at around the 9th fret a...

Re: Bent neck?
That's pretty much how my 1975 4001 is. It sounds and plays ok, so I don't worry about it at all.Hawkins7 wrote: I also wanted to note that the tension on the G side rod is almost nil but the E side is very tight in order for the neck to be straight. Is this normal?

Re: D'Addario Nickel Wounds - Impressions?
I use them on my 1975 4001. I buy them singly in 45, 55, 75, 105 gauges (the same as Ric strings) as I like a big E string to prevent rattling against the frets when I'm playing on the lower frets with a pick, but need the overall tension keeping down as a precautionary measure due to past troubles ...

Re: Is there a quick way to tell Ric Roundwound strings
I recently compared some Ric roundwound strings to the 45, 55, 75, 105 D'Addario nickel XL strings (bought singly) that I'm currently using. To my eyes they look exactly the same (same proportions, winding, etc.), except that the Ric strings had silver ball ends, whereas the D'Addario singly bought ...
