Re: STRINGS FOR MY RICK 4003
Just a suggestion to revive this thread...
Pyramid flats provide the perfect feel and tone for the Rickenbacker basses - IME/IMO/YMMV. Not as floppy as TIs, and not as stiff as Rotos or LaBellas, but JUST right! Nice pluck (with a pick) and great tone!
Just one caveat - It can sometimes be a ...

Re: Is Paul McCartney's Rickenbacker bass wired backwards?
For the switch to be wired wrong (there are only two ways to wire it) it would have to be upside down, not backwards. I often play my 4003 with just the bridge pickup (RIHS) with the tone rolled back, and the sound is very "Silly Love Songs". I don't have the .0047 cap though, but no one knows if ...

Re: Is Paul McCartney's Rickenbacker bass wired backwards?
Interesting to note that during the Sgt Pepper era (or maybe just before or just after), Macca is photographed playing his 4001S through a Vox amp, and an open back Vox guitar cab (likely with 2x10" or 2x12" speakers)... The resulting "sound" can't possibly be from the "treble" pickup! I frequently ...

Re: Is Paul McCartney's Rickenbacker bass wired backwards?
A right handed wiring harness for a 4001 can't just be put on a left handed instrument. The solid leads on the Ajax caps would break before you could twist the pickup switch around to where it had to be. Whatever went into Paul's bass was built for it, no matter how it's wired, although I tend to ...

Re: Is Paul McCartney's Rickenbacker bass wired backwards?
In the photo with glasses and an LP cover, the volume and tone controls appear to be reversed, with vol on top (closest to the strings). This, and p'up switch flipped "down" for neck p'up (toaster) would be consistent with a right handed wiring harness, which was likely already assembled, awaiting ...

Re: Cock-eyed tuner on a 4003 MapleGlo - is this suspicious?
Just sold my 2011 4003FG, and 3 of 4 tuning pegs were cock-eyed like that. I straightened the worst one (also the G).

Re: Is is necessary???
I can say from personal experience that a plug, or any maple-to-maple graft (if done properly) will remain undetectable for at least six and half years. That's how long ago the headstock on my "4008CS" was lengthened to make it an 8-string. The graft is still undetectable under the cream finish. I ...

Re: Is is necessary???
Ok, aside from value (I knew the route would severely limit it's resale-ability anyway), I'm speaking aesthetically now... Should I paint the whole thing (except fretboard)? Or just the body? or Body and headstock???

Re: What strings are you using on your Ric right now 10/28/12
Pyramid Gold flats - best flat wound sound I've had on any bass in 40+ years of playing! Of course TI Jazz flats are also nickel wound. If you like TIs, but they are too floppy (which is my opinion), Pyramids WILL float your boat!

Re: Is is necessary???
I think Midnight Blue (MID) would get you where you want to go.
In the interest of "correctness", I would paint the headstock and back of the neck to match the body.
Which "Midnight Blue" is the correct one? And, where can I get it?
Honestly, this is what I was thinking too... My favorite ...
