Re: Mojo or time to refinish?

If it was up to me I'd refinish it. However the truth is that the market value nowadays is all about originality, and the fashion is for instruments that 40 years ago we'd have though looked pretty bad. Hence you may hurt its value by improving it. As one poster noted, nowadays you pay extra for hea...

Re: Selling a vintage Rick bass -experiences?

The urge to get rid of it is declining. Also, when I looks at it closely, there is a very small seam separation on the top http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t135/martinh_photos/DSCF1609%20small_1.jpg ( 4005s appear to sometimes have multi-piece bodies,I assume this is because they are substantially...

Re: Who would Have thought ? $3050 for 5 NOS Tubes

You ever heard Mullards in a really good tube amp? Lot's of good things are said about old Mullards on various gear forums. I've got a few NOS Amperex 6DJAs; one or two are Bugle Boys IIRC. Wonder what they'd go for? At these kinds of prices, treasure-hunters will start digging into old radios, amp...

William - No - unfortunately I mostly seem to acquire instruments and not sell them.

Selling a vintage Rick bass -experiences?

Howdy folks. I realized last week that it has probably been two years since I played my 1966 Rick 4005 ( it’s the instrument that someone put in the registry as FD-1381) but it’s actually FD-1227 - the photograph of the number was a bit blurred). Although I’m not short of cash, in some quirky way it...

<I've been aware of the JB Rickenbacker copies for decades. I'm really curious as to how they've escaped RIC's scrutiny - unless there's something I've missed in 5+ years of hanging around here.> Rick has enjoyed some good luck (and skillful lawyering) in convincing Judges in California that certain...

Are we offending the Brits with all this " knob " talk ? well if you must go British with the sense of humor; " ooooh, I saw six enormous knobs last week at the music store (laughter) "That's probably more than you've seen since VE day dear" (more laughter) Oh, I dunnow, the...

I remember playing a green "rickenbircher" (as they were known) in 1978, in the same store in England where I finally bought my '77 4001 instead. From my memory it's not a bad instrument, trademark issues aside. John Birch is a well-known and respected luthier in the U.K.

Eeeyuck.....not my cup of tea; Maybe when I was 17, I would have liked it. However, I've got a couple of Japanese ESP's, and they do make some very good quality instruments. My attorney opinion: {1} Probably not close enough for a trademark variation, although the shape of the top bout comes very cl...

It's a subject that draws strangely strong emotions in both directions. Personally I think patina is fine on antique furniture, but a guitar is not a piece of furniture. I've had a few bitter arguments with musical friends over decisions to spot fix or re-finish instruments that are are (to me) badl...

Tom: One minor word of warning. The heat gun is absoulutely the best way to get off that "liquid plastic" gloss, but Mark is not exagerating when he says it "pops". I was removing a similar finish from an EKO 12-string when a hot piece of plastic popped up from the finish. I had ...
