Keep in mind that Macca actually does use his thumb from time to time, as well as a pick and his fingers. Like most good bass players, he uses whatever fits the song and his comfort-level best.

Nolan, I just looked on a better monitor and can see the pick in the 2nd picture after zooming in. From the hand position in the 3rd, it looks like he probably is also.

Who makes a decent inexpensive compression pedal these days?
Aphex Punch Factory.
+1 on the Aphex - $100 and very neutral. It is optically coupled and has true bypass, too.
As for Paul and the Rick, the two pictures of him with it in the studio I have show him playing with his thumb and fingers ...
