Keep in mind that Macca actually does use his thumb from time to time, as well as a pick and his fingers. Like most good bass players, he uses whatever fits the song and his comfort-level best.

I read somewhere that he uses his thumb when playing repetitive straight-eights, though I can't think of ...

+1 on the Aphex - $100 and very neutral. It is optically coupled and has true bypass, too.

As for Paul and the Rick, the two pictures of him with it in the studio I have show him playing with his thumb and fingers ...
