Re: More on amps for early Byrds jangle

Last fall, I bought a really clean 1977 silverface Twin Reverb, and it suits my 370's perfectly. Especially for nailing the Byrds sound, with loads of compression, of course. The late 70's Twins are among the last vintage Fender bargains out there, usually in the $800 range. The blackface snobs ...

Re: The Housemartins

They're a huge influence on my band as well. Let us not forget those fantastic bass lines, courtesy of Norman "Fatboy Slim" Cook. Some of the best melodic bass playing I've ever heard. The funny thing is that he was doing the DJ thing on the side during that time, mixing Run DMC with the Clash, and ...

Re: The attack of "Olivia"

The 1968 "370" on eBay really caught my eye, naturally. It's my favorite model. It has some of the best birdseye maple I've seen on a Rick in a long time. The pictures do it justice. However, the picture of the inside of the control cavity depicted a hole that's kind of hard to dig your way out of ...

I started out on a '59 345 Capri, and I was always in awe of the body style. That was in 1987, and I got a copy of Richard Smith's book on RIC guitars when it came out the following year. It didn't surprise me to find out the guitar was designed by a German. Much later, I got a Telecaster Thinline ...

1998 360 FG

Still have:
2002 370/12 MG VP
2004 370 FG VP

The 345 had a single-truss rod neck that was warped, and deemed beyond repair in 1989 by the top guitar tech in my city. The guitar was in the family for 40 years, but seldom played. Dad preferred his ...

I'm with George on the Peavey Delta Blues. Mine has a 15" speaker that makes the amp sound much bigger than 30 watts. My Rickenbackers (370/6 & 370/12) sound fantastic through the amp, which is a real bargain for one made in the USA. I'd like to think that it's kind of like having a combo version of ...

That 450/12 in the picture is none other than that of Fred "Sonic" Smith. This was his main guitar in the MC5. He always had it strung as a 6-string, and those Gibson humbuckers turned it into an entirely different guitar altogether. Glad to see it's back in action.

Francesco, I recently watched your Youtube renditions of the Beatles' songs on bass, and I was very impressed with your performances. It was a revelation to hear the 1966 and 1967 Beatles songs with the bass guitar up front, because some of McCartney's best work was hidden in the mix. I never ...

My 370/6 is used for rhythm about 90% of the time, while my 370/12 is used for a more even balance of lead and rhythm work. If I want to stretch out on 6-sting leads, I switch over to my Les Paul, which feels more comfortable for string bending and such. Plus, the Grovers on the Les Paul hold the ...

Peavey Delta Blues combo w/15" speaker for gigs & band practice.
Fender Champion 300 combo for practice at home.
Both amps are used with a Line 6 POD XT as a pre-amp. My main gigging amp used to be a Fender Ultimate Chorus, until it died recently. The Champion 300 replaced a couple of Vox ...

Wow! I've seen the Byrds' German TV footage with Clarence, but this is much better in terms of bringing out his guitar in the sound mix. I've always been in awe of his sense of melody, but I was blown away by his playing in this video. At times, it seemed like he was playing counterpoint bass lines ...

Rickenbackers & Marshalls are definitely a good mix of sounds. When I play my 370 6-string through my Pod XT, my amp model is the JTM45. Add some compression, and you've got Pete Townshend circa 1965. I still prefer the Fender Twin model on the Pod for my 370-12, though.

I agree with the view that there is too much repackaging going on with the new box set. If they are going to repackage the hits, they should put everything from the Sundazed 65-67 singles collection on the CD's. At least you get a sense of what the songs sounded like on the radio for the first time ...
