Re: Rickenbacker for Funk? Strings?

What actually surprises me is that Rick James rarely seemed to play bass live and relied on his band instead. His bassist usually has a StringRay of sorts. He was such a cool artist and I love his music.

In a slight detour off topic, I was watching The A-Team episode that stars Rick James and Isaac ...

Re: Pickguardian Bridge pickup cover

How popular are these? Does anyone have any experience? It seems to me most Ric players take the bars off and I have done just the same.

I've got a Blueburst (see profile pic) so I think the silver one would look the best. I'm not sure about the plexiglass but I believe that's optional. I think it ...

Re: Poor Sounds for E String from 4003 - sound clip...

John, I need to find the right allen key to fit the pole pieces but I will try this. The thought of dismantling that damn bridge pickup makes me shudder :)

Scott, it's recorded straight into my laptop with a cable from the Ric to the laptop. My usual rig is an Ashdown ABM EVO II 575W head with ...

Re: Poor Sounds for E String from 4003 - sound clip...

Maybe it is my imagination - does anyone feel the E string is weaker on that clip? The second riff (Psycho Killer) feels weaker to me - less definition in the notes and generally not as punchy?

I didn't mean to cause any problems, I was just wondering whether my bass needs adjusting (if so, then ...

Re: Poor Sounds for E String from 4003 - sound clip...

Joey, if you were in the UK I would happily ship you my 4003 but I'm not sure I'd want to risk it to the USA, plus the cost will be quite high. Do you have any suggestions on which particular thing I should adjust on the bass?

The strings are a D'Addrio EXL170 - it's a 105 string as I had a 100 but ...

Poor Sounds for E String from 4003 - sound clip...

Afternoon all,

I've been having a little bother with my 4003 and I was wondering if you guys could help. I've been setting it up, with help of Joey's notes and I think it's sounding better. However, the E strings is pretty rubbish and has no power compared to the lovely tone of the other strings. I ...

Lighter Gauge Strings?

As I have mentioned in a previous thread, I"ve strung my Ric 4003 with new D'Addrios but in a lighter gauge (the E string is only 100, opposed to the 105 that was on before). I think something may need adjusting because of this - do I need to adjust the string height or truss-road? If it is the ...

Re: Rickenbacker for Funk? Strings?

What are the Rick stock strings? How do they compare to the D'Addrios I bought? Marcus' finger tone (e.g. The Nightfly by Donald Fagen) is exactly what I'm looking for. Deep, growly :)

Thanks for the advice, I'm not looking for a bright over the top slap tone, just deep and growly!

Rickenbacker for Funk? Strings?

Evening all,

Just wondering, I'm wondering if you can get a nice funk sound, similar to a StingRay from a Rickenbacker? If so, what pickup/EQ settings would you choose? I think that sticking to both pickups and keeping the treble back should work but am not too sure. I love playing my Rickenbacker ...

Re: The Ric Is Coming - Looking for some Amp Advice

Well I was woekn at 8:58am with a lovely big parcel in bubble wrap. I found inside a beautiful 4003 that is just fantastic. It's Blueburst, first time I've seen this colour before and it looks stunning. I played for a while, which turned into an hour :) Beyond that, I decided to remove the bridge ...

Re: The Ric Is Coming - Looking for some Amp Advice

Thanks for all the advice guys! Just to say, I was playing a fretless because that was all the shop had in stock. My 4003 is fretted :) I checked with Parcelforce today and thanks to the guy selling using Parcelforce 48, it won't be here till Monday! Why is life always like this - oh well, just ...

The Ric Is Coming - Looking for some Amp Advice

Evening everyone,

After my last post, I made the jump and purchased the Blueburst 4003 and it should be arriving tomorrow or Saturday. I simply can't wait. Since I started playing playing bass when I was 15, a Rickenbacker was always what I wanted on the basis on looks and tone, without every ...

First Ric - 1978 3001 vs. 2008 4003

Morning all,

This is my first post here, so hello everyone. If all goes well, I should be a more regular member of this forum. Basically, I've got the opportunity to make my bass dream come through and get a Rickenbacker. I've got some money that I'll never have again and I want to get the thing I ...
