Re: Optima 4099, the new Maxima ?
Yeah, when I said $70 USD I was including shipping to the US in that. The set of strings was only like 22 euro, then shipping was another 30 euro or so. Mikko, let us know what you end up thinking about them! As a fellow flatwound enthusiast, I'm really curious about these. When I bought mine from ...

They may be €24 at Thomann but the shipping from them is something like 40 dollars.

Re: Optima 4099, the new Maxima ?
Yes, that the ones I got. I don’t know much about metals so can’t say, but it would surprise me if these are steel. The trend with me is that I just don’t like the feel of steel strings, and the Optimas does not give me that steel feeling. Also the colour of the metal seems the same as Maximas (and...

Re: Optima 4099, the new Maxima ?
I haven't mixed and matched to compare the outer wrap feel so they could be more similar than I thought, but I was pretty sure it was SS. Here is what the package says: Optima Chrom Saiten Saiten fur besonders hohe Anspruche. Optima Bass-Saiten sind ein produkt fur besonders hohe anspruche. Alle sai...

Re: Optima 4099, the new Maxima ?
They are close but not identical, the optima has a different outer wrap feel to it (probably SS?) and the strings feel a bit tighter/higher tension. I haven't ripped the optimas apart yet but before they are strung up they have a very similar feel and look. I'd wager the core and outer wrap are diff...

Re: Flats
NO, THEY'RE NOT! I have played both. The new Fender flats are definitely NOT chromes. They have a different feel, different widths of windings on the strings, different sheen to the metal, and most of all, different tone. D'Addario chromes are hollow. The new Fender flats growl. Is any one of you F...

Re: How to file a new saddle
Go to home depot and get a triangular file. Wrong tool for the job, unless you're trying to cut corners and costs on a $2000.00 instrument. Its not about cutting corners, its about cutting the saddles. If the files intended for cutting plastic or bone nuts is capable of cutting the metal saddles wi...

Re: How to file a new saddle
Go to home depot and get a triangular file. All you have to do is hold the saddle with a gripper of some sort and then make a clean pull with the file. Do that a few times in the same direction, not back and forth, and you should have a clean groove. Once the groove is deep enough you can begin digg...

Re: '76 4001.. worth repairs?
I was really satisfied at having the chance to set my 4001FL back up into working order after buying it in fairly beat-up condition. It is also a '76. I just want to encourage you to pursue all the reasonable repairs you can because I think it'll help you bond with the bass. Since your bass isn't a...

Re: '76 4001.. worth repairs?
1. It's beat up. Not that that's a big problem but it has a couple spots that worry me. Namely a fall off a strap and a lot of stress lines. I don't know if they're from cold or what. (I couldn't get a good pic of it.) no idea 2. The frets are shot. I don't know if they should be replaced or if the...

Re: Buying a second hand Rick 4001
You will need to find a device for threading the old rod, but bending it shouldn't be too bad and all you need is a metal file to cut and shape the top part. When you get a new TR nut, the operation should take a long afternoon or perhaps a weekend.
