Hi folks, its been a wee while.

I installed a MusicMan active circuit from my Sabre bass around 1986-87 into my 1985 4003 and I also wired the centered position on the PUP selector switch to put both PUP's out of phase, and the sound I got was pretty good, I thought. :o

I was a bit suspicious about the open backed tuners, thinking they might be replacements, as I'd only seen the small closed Schallers, but when I took them
off to check this out, they are in fact the original tuners and no sign of any other tuners being fitted. It's a December 1994 ...

O.K. I know my 4004L is 2nd hand, but maybe these pix will suffice until some of the new 4004's arrive. :D

I have 2, 12k Toaster PUP's either fitted to my 4001, 4003 or 4004 (depending what time of the year it is!!!!)
and I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the history or these wee elusive animals.

i.e. when did they (Rickenbacker) start making them and maybe perhaps why.

At first glance of the bottom pic, I thought your Daphne Blue refinished '73 was a Sea Green 4003. It's looks very nice.

The 4004L, I LOVE IT!!! The 4004L is really nice to play, its a bit like a cross between my Geddy Jazz bass and my 4003 (2000), not just the neck mind, the body is very comfy when you play sitting ...

I just got a nice JG 4004L (1994) last week off ebay. Its in very nice condition apart from a bit of finish cracking
on the neck heel, which I can live with.

I've put a couple of 12k Toasters on it to try out, but I think I'll go back to the HB-1's for a slightly different sound to
my 4003 and 4001 ...

I stand corrected jps, but I think lots of folk refer to them, incorrectly perhaps as TRC's.

There's nothing much more disapointing than removing the nameplate on your early 4003 and finding
nice shiny paint where you would expect to find the nuts for the truss rods. Someones nicked them ...
