You are the guy that I (and a lot of us) regard as the leading expert on this kind of stuff, and I just want to say; it makes me proud to have, purely by accident and with absolutely no deliberation or intent, nor anything to personally gain, provided you with some info that catches your ...

Re: 4003 S-curve neck?
I had a similar thing with a 1986 4003. The "S-curve" manifestd itself as like a hump around the 14th fret to the 20th fret, then again near the nut. It was frustrating to attempt to set it up.

Can I play? I mean, can I show off this bass again?
My May '73 4001MG was favorite...(top)
until Dale Fortune worked his magic on the '72 4001MG formerly owned by Marc...now a Montezuma brown or Walnut (bottom)

The only one I own, so I can't speculate. This one is definitely all original, though.

Yes, I've read the same account, back a few years ago when this topic came up before.
It didn't ring true then, so I performed some experiments and found it implausible, if not downright impossible, to get this result using the methods and materials described: A brown stain around the edges of ...

Re: Azureglo coming my way . . .
. . . from Davis Guitar Works. This is a refinish of a '72 Jetglo that I took ownership of mid-project from Bryce Gracey. I was very impressed by the restored '72 Azureglo that Trotty had a few years ago (remember it used to be black and red?), so when this opportunity came up, I just had to go ...

Re: 4001v63 trussrod wrench
When I considered straightening the rods in one of my Rics and consulted this forum, John Hall advised that I don't, and explained that the rods were curved for a reason. He was right - the bass has a laser-straight neck now, very low action and no buzzing or fretting out with medium-gauge ...

Re: Glueburst
If I may, I will quote another fantastic Rickenbacker builder/finisher/repairman (other than Paul) I know who has experience in this, Dale Fortune. Dale had sent this email to me as he was fixing my 1972 4001MG with this exact problem. I was really curious as to how this staining could happen. I ...

Brings back memories...
Once upon a time, I so lusted after an early 1970s 4001 with all the cool, discontinued stuff that I believe I lost my mind. Temporarily, I thought... though I am realizing that I never did find it again.
But I do understand the drive these guys are feeling to "win" this '72 ...

Re: 1971 4001 - A real beauty, but what a price tag
A day before I bought my 1972 4001 in 2007 I lost a bid on a 1971 FG 4001, it sold for over 8K, I'd say this price is high but I've seen higher.
Unless the pictures are misleading it's one of the most beautiful vintage basses I ever saw and the wood is fantastic.
I wish I had more GAS money ...

I think you should send the old tailpiece to me!
I just bought a three screw C64 tail for my 1990 4001CS that had a slight tail lift.
It looks great with just three holes to secure it.
Hope it doesnt bend!
Keep the old tail.
:D
