Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

Thank you to all who helped me figure this bass out. One of the board members made me an offer I couldn't refuse. He has the ability to restore it to as near to original as possible. It would have taken me years to do it right so I have sold the bass to him and he can identify himself if he wishes ...

Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

I chose the right guy for the job and trust him completely, he has worked on 1000's of instruments including some famous ones that would blow your mind and he is familiar with Rick basses. I've asked him to take pictures all the way through the restoration process and I'll post them as he sends them ...

Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

Thanks guys, it goes off to one of the best builders in Canada this afternoon...I'll ask him to take some photos as he strips, repairs and refinishes it. Turnaround time might be around 2 months though as he's pretty busy.

Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

Its such a good deal, you feel guilty (almost!). Is there a story behind the sale Mike? (no worries if you want to keep it private).

I knew it was a good deal as soon as I saw the ad, but I had no idea of the value of the bass as I had to act quick. It was a girl in her 20's selling it and she ...

Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

I only saw it this morning but my desperate e-mail was obviously to no avail! Very nice score Mike! :) I'd say its worth investing a bit to have this properly restored - you don't see many late 60's 4001s around. Like Bryce, I'm in the GTA area, and would be willing to offer whatever assistance you ...

Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

UNREAL deal - i always miss the good local steals...enjoy it - and i hope you can bring it back to it's former glory.

i've got a pretty decent parts box, and am local, so drop me a line if you need any help.

Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

The finish looks pretty poorly done the more I look at it so on she goes on the weekend for a re-fin to Fireglo or natural. Here's the headstock shots front and back. Looking at the wing separation, I bet it was caused by the previous owner hammering a block of wood into the bridge cavity to ...

Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

I have a couple of pro repairmen acquaintances that do great re-fins so that's the way I would go for sure. Pretty happy with this bass for sure and I'm starting to think it really is a 1967.

Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

Just looking at the registry, I saw a couple of mapleglo 1968 4001's that had all the same features, truss rod cover with made in USA under the R, checkerboard binding, same shaped heel, same fretboard...so it's likely a bass made in November 1967 could have all these features and be correct IMO. I ...

Re: Need help dating my New Rickenbacker 4001

Here's a couple more shots, the wiring only allows for a couple of inches movement of the pickguard and I'm not prepared to pull it out yet so this is the best cavity shot I could get. My early feeling has me thinking something isn't right here. It doesn't look like a copy Ricky to me but the serial ...
