Hey there Ben !! Its nicer than I expected. Worked with her last nite. Has the clank I like; I just had trouble getting enough thump though, so I thought perhaps the cap WAS in there.

That darn cap

Having a senior moment; I should remember this. When did Rick start issuing the 4003's w/o the .0047 cap ?

Just to let every Jon Camp fan know, his Great White 4001 still resides in New Jersey. I have left it as it appeared 1n the early 80's, did not convert her back to the 1970's look. She is in wonderful condition considering her age and mileage.

This is really interesting; IMHO for a good 5 years his bass has sounded like ****; terribly thin, lacking the substantial mids and lo's of his 1970's sound. I thought his neck pickup might have had a problem, not the bridge.

To Jeff Scott: 1. no, I can't play anywhere near as good as Jon. I apologize to his bass everytime I pick her up. 2. so glad the mods bothered you ! I actually gave some thought to having her restored to 1974 appearance, but changed my mind. All I've done was had her cleaned up, removed the ...

Jeff, I have a 4001 TRC that has faded to off white/beige. You can have it if you like.

I'll add my 2 cents. I don't know the electronics of these heads; I'll leave that to those who do. However, I played thru both, in my house, with the same 4001. Hands down the 800's sound was far superior to the 700. The 800 had more range to my ears, lower lows and crisp highs. The 700 was blah ...

Just want to add my 2 cents. Steve is a stand up businessman. My unit had a problem; he replaced it, zero problems. Replacement unit sounds radically different than the first one (?) but I'm keeping it.

Everybody is different but I use a mixed set of Ernie Ball round wounds on my 3 4001's- .100, .080., .070, .050. I think the lite gauge suggested above will not draw out enough of the Rick tonal character, regardless of amp power.

Steve, how old is your 4003 ? Any of these built after 1990 should be making you very happy in terms of sound because the .0047 cap isn't there. Any possibility you have a pre-1990 with the cap ?

Re the Roto strings discussion, I was a victim of them too; they took my 4001 and bowed the neck horribly. You're right, we just didn't know 35 years ago that Rick truss rods weren't the same as Fenders. Every "repair" guy I went to back then tried to adjust the neck with the rods and not set the ...

Jake, I'd make some calls to stores within say 100 mile radius of home, find out who has 4001's/4003's, take a Saturday and go try 'em.
Its worth the time and effort. Just keep in mind that if a 4001 is what feels right but doesn't sound right, you get a fuller sound by having the .0047 capacitor ...
