Re: Chris Squire has passed . . .

. . . or Close to the Edge , or Drama , or 90125 , I say . . . Chris was the prime mover behind my taking up the bass guitar, and therefore, musicianship. It took me a long time to finally own a Rick, but the incentive to try to get (near to) that sound, to play like he did, was with me from the ...

Jet Black

Jet Black : Just found out recently about this band from Quebec, whose album "In Paradox" was released this past September. An early-'90s "shoegaze" influence is dominant, and while the guitars are apparently all of the Fendery persuasion, bassist Stéphanie Vézina offers the unmistakably ...

Re: 4003s/5 new tuning

As to EADGC tuning -- I have that on my 4004cii convert, and I've found that I have to use extra-light gauge strings because the neck can't take anything heavier. My 4005s/5 is in standard 5-string tuning (albeit with a low A, not low B) but its neck has also proven to be very touchy, and I can't go ...

Re: Geddy being... well... Geddy

Music to my earbuds! Thanks for posting. "Limelight" was one of the first basslines I ever learned (thank you Guitar For the Practicing Musician , back in the day), and I learned much from it.

One thing that unsettled me many years later though was finding out that Geddy, in le studio up to that ...

Re: Rutherford 4001 tone on 'Selling England'?

Well, I don't know what kind of amp he was using back then, but my guess would be the standard Rotosounds and both pickups on full vol, full treble. And if this clip is any indication, pick the strings just below the neck pickup; a fuller, "rounder" tone. Squire and Geddy I think favored, if not ...

Re: E & A strings getting choked at the nut...

That seems like a gnarly twist but not sure it would cause the problem you describe... and the strings look fine to me... Hm. I'm puzzled. Can you make sound clips of the open strings and first fret for each string?

Hi Rhys. Well to start off with -- mainly as a test to see if this lo-fi method ...

Re: E & A strings getting choked at the nut...

OK . . . here you go. Thanks guys!

Also included is a shot of sighting the neck; you can see the counterclockwise twist relative to the body-plane. However, this has not affected intonation or playability . . . this is, unless this has something to do with this new problem . . . :(

And erm ...

E & A strings getting choked at the nut...

On my '97 4003s/5, the open E, and to a lesser extent, open A (i.e., 4th and 3rd strings) come off "choked" when sounded; their vibration is getting dampened somehow. They seem to be getting pulled to the bass side too much; if I manually nudge them trebleward behind the nut, they vibrate freely ...

Re: Favorite Artist's Ric Bass Moments

Robert et al. -- oh, I agree re: Mills on early R.E.M.; too many choice cuts to choose from! "9-9", "Laughing" especially, indeed -- first impressions are the strongest though, which is why I cited 'Reckoning'; his little C-Major melodic line in "So. Central Rain" after the chorus was so effective ...

Re: '03 4004Cii"/5" -- as if it jumped right off the page...

Kevin, did you not find the TI Jazz round five set that I installed satisfactory? I'm not an expert player, mind you, but I don't recall the bass having much of a bow with those relatively low-tension strings on it.

Paul -- I actually did like their feel, but AFAICT they currently don't make a ...

Re: '03 4004Cii"/5" -- as if it jumped right off the page...

An update . . .

Though repetitively tightening the truss rod nuts would help cure the forward-bowing, I found that the next day it would be right back. The nuts are about as tight as they'll go now, though the treble-side one still has some purchase. I'm not going any further with them, though!

So ...

Re: Just picked up a 1977 4001 in oh so lovely cream!

Congrats, and welcome . . . yes; the (aged) white/black trim style sure has a special allure to it.

It looks to be in really good shape, too -- true? How's the neck?
