That's a face only a mother can love. I don't remeber seeing pix of Rutherford playing a red 8 string...but I'll take their word for it.

Was the cream colored double neck Rutherford played a lot also a Shergold?

It wouldn't be that bad looking if it didn't have that horrible control cavity plate and pickguard.

I agree with Joey, that control cavity plate is really ugly, and the pickguard doesn't really look matched to the body shape.

Well, FWIW, I like it; only I wouldn't know what to do with 8 strings. The headstock shape should appeal to "potato head 4005/8" fans.

I've been looking at these for years (Shergold) and finally had a chance to play one (not an 8) at last years Dallas Show. The neck was like a baseball bat, so I kind of forgot about it. Also it was kind of heavy. Nevertheless, I've been intrigued with the style since I first saw one at the John Entwistle auction in London 3 years ago.

He says it was purchased from Genesis, plus the fact that it's autographed. The opening bid dosen't seem to have much celebrity power. You never see Rutherford playing on of these but he has an arcenal of them. I think, being English, he likes supporting the company.

Well i think it looks FAB...I'm quite tempted. Mind you I REALLY like the look of the Burns Bison as well.

sometimes Rics can look so girly...!

( I'm joking guys, honest . Well the bit about Rics anyway. I do really like the other 2 basses)

Hello from Italy! This is my first post here :-)

The control plate you see is the top of the Module: the Shergold Modulator range has the unique feature to have interchangeable electronics, from a choice of 8 different models. The neck on these instruments are fabulous, a way better than F*nder ones! The bodies instead are not so great, being made of an African wood called Obeche which has the tendency of disintegrating, and the polyester finish is prone to cracking(this is a simple way to check the originality of the instrument: if it hasn't crack, probably has been refinished...). Mike's doubleneck has also demountable halves, to allow the use of the single necks as stand alone instruments(with fake halves to regain a single aspect...). The company went down in 1992 as the founder, Jack Golder, died suddendly.

Cheers,

Everytime I've seen a Shergold, it makes me think that they've got some connection or relation to Wal basses. Something about the general shape of the bodies and some of the hardware.

Did Wal and Shergold share a common designer or something?

I looked up a site on shergold's...they had a lot of pix and talk about Rutherford's double neck beast(s).

Odd idea...might have been a case of being ahead of their time, or just too radical to catch on.

You know alot of Genesis's old gear was auctioned off on Ebay about 2-3 years ago. A huge amount of items including everything from road cases to Mike's Shergold Doubleneck. I guess they figured there would be no more use for this stuff after Genesis disbanded.

Mike's Double was not entirely auctioned, only a top 6-string half was sold to the Shergold website administrator. The main axe(4 string bass and 12 string guitar) remained at the Farm. In a recent interview to an Italian magazine, Mike Rutherford promised the interviewer to bring the doubleneck again on the road in the case of a Genesis reunion(altough he didn't mention which one...).

I emailed the seller and he said the bass weighs 10 lbs, the usual for this bass, and, he has a certificate that backs the sale/auction whatever it was. Also the neck profile is like a Jazz bass. I am going to ask him to scan me a copy of the COA.

Welcome Matteo! I take it you are a Genesis fan? I have been since I first saw them in April '72, on their first US tour. Nobody here knew who they were but we all became instant fans!
