Shonen Knife Ric Pic

Post by octagon »

I don't know if this has been posted before but I found this pic of Naoko from Shonen Knife playing her 360.She is big fan of Rickenbackers.I have a Shonen Knife T Shirt from the 90's that has a drawing of what looks like a Rickenbacker 330 only the head stock says "S.K." I gave her a copy of the Rickenbacker book for her birthday back around 88.

That's two fun/good Rick bands with the initials S.K. - the other being Sleater-Kinney.

Does Carrie Brownstein use the 330 exclusively as a live guitar? I have an old Guitar Player magazine where she's quoted as saying she used a 72 Gibson SG and a 69 Jazzmaster for their latest album at the time.

She has used all three in live shows. Her amps are a Vox AC30/6TB Top Boost Combo 2X12 and a Fender Twin reverb Silverface combo 2X12.

Naoko is a wonderful songwriter, singer, and guitarist, and I'm a big fan of Shonen Knife. I have seen them several times in concert, and they put on a show unlike any other that brings the house down. Thanks for sharing that photo, Mitch.

They were actually playing live in Oklahoma City last night, and I would have been there if not for my own band commitment. My old bandmate from when I lived in Oklahoma City called me from her cellphone live from the concert; wish I could'a been there.

Naoko actually has a signature guitar with a Japanese guitarmaker, but she is also a guitar collector, obviously with very good taste.

If any of y'all have not heard Shonen Knife, they are a unique Japanese pop/punk band that will put a smile on your face and set the toes a-tappin... check them out.

Mick - thanks for reminding me about the "Birds and the B-Sides" cd... I just popped that in, and man, that sounds good.

My old band in Oklahoma City had a female vocalist/guitarist, and we were focused on original music. When we played out, we only played a few covers. One of them was "Ice Cream City," by Shonen Knife, from the B-Sides album. Great stuff!!

What I've head recently is that she uses the Ricks more as studio guitars and prefers the SG live. You can hear them fairly clearly, I believe on All Hands on the Bad One. Somebody needs to give her a 12-string.

Carrie Brownstein and I went to high school together and were pretty good friends for a while. She sat near me in Algebra or Geometry. I think, if I remember correctly, I gave her her first guitar lessons. It was just a few times, but I think it was the first time she played the guitar. I mostly showed her chords. I remember she'd just seen Beat Happening in concert and I think around then she heard the Jam's All Mod Cons, too. Anyway, she sure took to the guitar. She's a fantasic player and a really good person on top of it. We went to the same college and graduated the same year (two years late) but I haven't seen her in quite a while.

Red Rob -

Give Shonen Knife a try. They may not be for everybody, but they are wonderful if you give them a chance with an open mind. Here are some recommendations:

My favorite album by them is "Brand New Knife" (~1997), for its great songwriting, production, and sound:

Don't be fooled by the bunnies, this is rock!

The classic SK album that many of their fans first heard was "Let's Knife", which is a great album, very punk if you like that style (~1991-92):

That is from about when they opened for Nirvana on Nirvana's European Tour, at Kurt Cobain's insistence (and over Nirvana's record company's objections), because Kurt was a huge fan of theirs thru underground tapes.

The album previously mentioned was "Birds & the B-Sides," a b-side compilation with a wide mix of live cuts, covers, special release songs, etc.:

Two other great full-length albums you might consider are "Rock Animals" and "Happy Hour":

Bottom line is you can't go wrong with any of them. Try Amazon or your favorite record store. If you like punk, go with "Let's Knife" for sure. There are also all kinds of special Japanese releases and the such to track down if you find you like them. The Motorhead fans from the Forum might be surprised to know that Lemmy Kilmister likes them and recorded a remix from one of their "Rock Animals" cuts about 12 years ago.

Enjoy!

The PLBG album Mitch recommends has been re-released in the USA as of a couple of months ago.

I would second his recommendation. The early stuff is great.
