Paul Says No to Rickenbacker

Post by simer4001 »

On page 44 from "Each One Believing" Paul talks about his reasons for playing the Hofner. Forgive the length.

Quote:

"...No, you know what? I just like playing it and I don't like fussing around--I've already got enough changes, you know. I change to electric guitar to acoustic guitar to piano to ukulele to bass, so I wouldn't wanna be changing between the Hofner and the Ricky. You know, the Rickenbacker's a good bass, but at the moment I just like the Hofner. It's very light, and you know that may not seem like an important factor, but it is actually...it changes how you play it. A light instrument is easier to move about with..."

I'm hoping he changes his mind for 2005, but not likely. Page 45 shows a great shot of the Hofner without the playlist.

I don't know he's been playing the Hofner on and off for 44-45 years. Some people make strange concessions for strange reasons.

I got a better idea, reissue it and JH can present him with one. McCartney has said he is a sucker for free guitars.

They did reissue it, didn't they. The C64 and C64S. I think John Hall actually did present one to him in LA while he was recording "DRIVING RAIN". I believed he used it on the track "Spinning On An Axis".

I loved Paul's 89/90 93 and 2002 Tours, but for me I will always love the 76 Tour. Several reasons:

1) I first discovered The Beatles and Paul
2) As I look back, it isn't a Beatles revival show.
3) I love tracks like "Letting Go", "Soily", "Hi, Hi, Hi, and yes...even "Silly Love Songs".
4) When he played bass, he played his Rickenbacker.

I found a quote of Paul's from Hunter Davies biography on the Beatles. The Postscript 1985 chapter page 370 it is as follows " I do stand back at times, unlike John. I look ahead. I'm careful. John would go for the free guitar and just accept it straight away, in a mad rush. I would stand back and think, but what's this bloke really after, what will it mean?" Sounds like he was leery of accepting free guitars not a sucker for them.

Sucker for free guitars or something like that is also a paraphrase, I don't remember where I read it. but he did say something like that.

Yeah I meant the 4005, they're light I would imagine.

Quite light, you'd be surprised how comfortable they are to play.

Quite rightly!
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I'm sure you are correct Bob, besides 1985 was 20 years ago, things change
