Another cap question...
Recently I had what I thought was the .0047 cap removed from a 70's 4001. Now I'm not so sure the tech didn't remove an .047 by mistake. Yes the tone changed but the bridge pickup volume REALLY increased too; it buries the neck pickup if I don't turn the treble volume knob way down. Something tells me thats not supposed to happen. Any comments ?

I successfully performed the operation to one of mine last weekend and didn't notice a substantial change in volume of the bridge pickup relative to the neck pickup.
I wouldn't know the symptoms of bypassing one of the .047 caps. It wouldn't surprise me if the tech picked the wrong cap, though.
Don't start me on another rant, but I believe if we had more competent repair people in the US, it wouldn't be such a "throw-away society." I can't tell you how hard it is in Chicago to find someone who can fix ANYTHING.

Play what you love, love what you play!
I did a bypass on mine just the other week. Before the bypass the two pickups were at similar levels and I had to drop the bridge pickup after the bypass to match the output of the neck pup.
The change in the bridge pup was huge. All of a sudden it had a big bottem instead of the clank. The high end of the bridge pickup does not change. The cap cuts out lows and low mids.

Yes, if the treble pickup is close to the strings it will be a lot louder although actually only the bass and mids are louder but the nect effect is more apparent volume, I keep mine like that anyway. I raise the bridge until it sounds nice and clear with both volumes on ten, then I might cut back the bass volume some, I like the bite of a close bridge pickup to the strings.
