This is Chapter Two of last year's story of having seen one for sale locally, then after I told the guy what it was and he thought about it for a day, he didn't want to sell it. Fortunatley for me, I spotted his recent repost (he was selling stuff to buy a 1960s-vintage car) and was able to get in touch with him before he sold it to someone else. (Of course, this time the price was more realistic, not incredibly cheap like before.)

The case has "character":

But what is inside is beautiful:

It does have a little rust on the bass pickup mounting ring and the jackplate, but besides that and one minor ding on the upper bout, it's pretty pristine for having been a player's guitar.

It will get a good cleaning (the frets need to be cleaned for certain). I am proud to be its third owner.

I don't think this one is a "recycled" Shadow...depends on the serial prefix.

What are your first impressions of the neck compared to another 4003?

....and of course, the first two letters of the serial #? Z?

Nice looking bass, while it is always nice to find an instrument that is in "as new" condition, I think sometimes having an instrument that has been used but is in "almost pristine" condition is preferable as you feel more relaxed when using it. Good score.

I only plunked around on it a bit last night when I had it out taking the pictures, and only through my Vox AD120VTH and 2x10" Kustom cabinet. I'll have to do a side-by-side comparison with a couple of my other basses with the Sunn Sentura II or the Fender Dual Showman Reverb (both with cabinets containing 2x15" JBL D-130Fs); I'm thinking the 1975 4001S and the Blackstar for comparison, as those, at least to me, feel "nicest" when playing. Keep in mind I'm not a "real" bass player, only a hack.

The serial number starts with ZI date code, September 1986, and if I remember correctly, the numbers are 2573.

Brian, I'm with you on being more comfortable playing a guitar that isn't near mint. The 1975 4001S makes me a little nervous when I play it because it is in NM condition, whereas the Blackstar has its share of player wear/dings, so I am at ease playing it.

Joey, I'd be glad to meet you at my work location (near the John Wayne Airport) after work or on a weekend if you want to give it (and any other of my fourteen others) a try. My only problem might be fitting the Sunn Sentura II (smaller than the Dual Showman Reverb!) in the Insight with the bass all at the same time ... of course, you could always BYOBA (bring your own bass amp)!
