Time's up!!

Ok, I've sat back and read all of these posts regarding flats vs rounds, 5-string vs 4-string, effects vs no effects, etc...

C'mon guys....live and let live....theres room for all here....please don't berate somebody for their choice and claim that one way is "better" than the other...some bassists don't consider themselves "limited" by flats & 4-strings....just as some have been down that road and choose to go a step further with 5 or more strings.....big deal, who really cares.....you're gonna like what YOU like, but don't bust someone else for liking something you DON'T like....geesh, it's so petty!!

Please,everybody....LIGHTEN UP!

it is time to bring up the pick versus fingers topic again ... I like that one because I'm a 50/50 pick finger guy ...

my favorite flatwound bass player was a guitarist ... Roy Wood from The Move ... he had incredible attack and distortion on the LP Split Ends ... that band also featured Jeff Lynne ...

Roy Wood. There's a name you don't hear often! Quite a prodigy! He was associated with Annie Haslam for a time...

When I want "the sound", I use my RIC.

But truth be known, for mindless "comfort playing" I stick with my MIM fretless J-bass with Tapewound Black Nylon strings (LaBella). Tone control (nearly) always full. Need "Waaahh"? Bass PU off, Treble full on. Need definition? Treble PU off, Bass full on. Need a solid underlining body? All full on. When I need to, I grab a pick and grind away. Yes, on a fretless with nylon taped strings!

Point is, use what you can to get the sound and character you want. Period.

I've used a pick occasionally on a fretless, usually when palm muted.

I don't think there was ever any need to lighten up. Just as Jeff likes to poke gentle fun at 4 stringers and flatwounds, some like to return the favor. Nothing serious going on here.

My biggest problem here is restraining myself from making fun of Geddy and Rush. Somebody would probably get seriously offended.

you can say a lot of things about there music if you dont like it or gettys looks but not his ability to play bass,taurus peddles with his feet and sing at the same time its pretty amazing,he is an amazing bassist.

Everyone here has their own list of great bassists. Geddy is at the top of mine with a few other guys who have inspired me over the years like Squire, Entwistle, Pastorius, Percy Jones, Ray Brown, Jack Bruce, Dee Murray, JJ Kale, Duck Dunn, Macca, Tony Levin, John Wetton, Dave Hope, Roger Waters, Fran Shehan, Jim Fielder John Paul Jones, Pete Farndon, and the guy from Free. What is his name anyway?
