I've been getting back into John Wetton and his distorted p-bass ... I put King Crimson "Red" and "USA" on a CD for listening in my car ...

And Geddy is amazing ... he plays clean and fast ... and Rush is tight ... then he plays keys and sings lead ... that's a lot of talent in one person ... I didn't like Rush when they first came out ... I got into them in the 80's ...

...I liked Rush when they first came out. They scared me in the '80's!...Geddy using that boat paddle bass, Lifeson slacking on the guitar, keyboards, keyboards, keyboards!!!...

I didn't like rush when i first heard them i was i think intimidated by Getty's bass lines i thought my god how do i figure this out, then the more i learned to play Getty the more i appreciated the intricacy of there music.watching Getty play on stage in concert is hypnotic,the bassist for Fog Hat[i don't know who he is]is also incredible to watch on stage.

I heard lots of Rush and Ozzy when my older son was in high school. Listening to Rush gave me a much greater appreciation for Ozzy.

But I thought Geddy was great as vocalist in the McKenzie brothers' "Take Off". There, I've said something nice.

No offense to anyone else's taste, it's just not my kind of music at all and not my kind of bass playing. Not at all. You can't argue taste, and it's definitely not to my taste.

more and more talk about flats is scarey ... just thinking about putting flatwound strings on a ric bass scares the heck out of me ... isn't that why God made hofner's and p-basses ... so man would have a place to put his flat wound strings???

and how come they call them flats ... they are round ... just smoother ...

Rush is not for everybody ... a lot of people don't like the vocals ... and a lot of the song writing revolves around bass lines ... but you would be hard pressed to find a better drummer or bass player and the guitarist is very good too ...

and flats on a fretless does make sense ...

You guys do understand that sometimes I employ hyperbolic rhetoric to shock you into reconsidering you opinion on certain topics ...

Isn't that what Michael Jackson once used?

Actually....the MAIN reason I use flats, ahem.., is the smooth feel and lack of "noise" while moving up and down the board....and I like the "thump" factor....just personal preference, I guess.

I really do like the sound of roundwounds, though...I like the analogy of sounding like someone working on a Buick in the background, too....

I've also used half-rounds before....can't really tell a difference between them and the roundwounds..

Flatwounds have a flat ribbon outer winding, and it's usually over a hex core. But you knew that.

If you avoid the desire to look like Diana Ross / Tinkerbell through the use of plastic surgery and if you say no to sleep-overs with 13 year old boys, you should be ok.

I use flats on Rics because they have a much more solid bottom and more presence in the bass and lo mid spectrum where the bass is supposed to be unless you are a lead bass player and like to play in your living room. And believe it or not they cut through the mix much better than round wounds. Try them before you put them down, I am very familair with RW's having used them for 25+ years, how many people here who put down flats have given the newer ones made in the past 4-5 years a consistent trial? If you haven't had them on a bass long enough to get accustomed to them (1 year IMHO is minimum) you should not be giving opinions on them. I still have a RW Ric bass which I occasionally use.
