It's amazing how many basses one can go through.

My first was a Kawai, they are more famous for making pianos but it was a nice bass. I ended up losing this one somehow. Then I got a...

beat up '74 4001. I messed that one up trying to "fix it" with v63 parts. At this point my dad also bought me a Hofner. Then came college and a...

Yamaha BB200, which was actually a great bass. I loaned that to someone and never got it back. It was better for Jazz band and pit orchestras than the hofner. The hofner got traded in for a...

Telecaster because I had to start playing guitar in the band I was in. Then I graduated and got to play bass again and I got a...

4001CS which I wish I still had. I then decided I had to have 5 strings. So I traded it in for a ...

MusicMan Stingray 5 which SUCKED! The neck always needed tweaking, and since I play with a pick mostly it didn't sound good. When I I played with my fingers it was ok. The electronics broke so it got sent to California to be repaired and my band had a recording session so I looked for a 4001v63 and found a...

4004c in the fall of '93 at a nice store in Brooklyn. The bass was nice but I wanted it to sound like a 4001, and it never did. I then saw a 4003s/5 in a store window and traded the yucky Musicman in for...

A mapleglo 4003s/5. I loved this bass at first but then the guitar player quit and I was now the guitarist again. I ended up trading the 4004c for a '66 360, which I then traded for a Twin which I then had "blackfaced".

I sold the 4003s/5 to Jeff Rath because I no longer played bass enough to control the B string and I rarely used the low B anyway. I bought a wonderful 4003.

Now it looks like I am back to playing bass, and I am saving for a 4001c64s.

Of course once I get that, I'll most likely have to start playing guitar again... but it'll be nice to have.

Does anyone else have the experience of, whenever you get your ideal set up, your situation changes?

John, I go through that a bit...played guitar for about 6 years straight until being cajoled into being a bassist again. I had accumulated a pretty nice set of guitar gear: a 1966 Fender Mustang w/DiMarzio FastTrak 1's in it, a 2001 650 Dakota, and a Peavey Triump PAG 120 combo. Pretty much scream city. Image

As a bassist I started with my old Carvin rig (300 W head and 2x10 cab), my 1975 4001, and my 1992 fretless J...but...

My son also plays bass, and was complaining that the Carvin head ******* out on him continually. Took one rehearsal for me to see he wasn't jerking me about that. So I had to get a new head (got a Behringer 300 W-not great, but good price)...

And then I was gassing for a new bass so I don't overwork the old 4001-a 2004 Fireglo Laredo entered the picture. But I'm not complaining...I generally don't part with guitars.

Amps...well that's another story. I don't want to know how much money I've spent over the years. Right now I have a suspicion that the Carvin head works OK with the 4004...it hasn't ******* out on me yet, so maybe I'll look for another cabinet soon so that my son and I don't have gear conflicts. Two amps would allow me to experiment with running the 4001 in stereo, too! Image

All in all, it's nice to be flexible enough as a musician to morph about like that, and certainly helps to have adequate equipment. Nothing like a guy who says "I'll play bass for you. Can I borrow an amp?"
