Lightshow on Letterman Last Night

Post by ric480 »

Anyone catch the David Letterman show Wednesday night ? Roger McGuinn sat in with the Paul Shaffer band and was using a Lightshow in the glimpse that I caught. Any more details anybody can share ?

John: The following information was received from Terry O via the Rickenbacker Registration Page mailbox. Quote:That was actually McGuinn's seldom-seen blue Rick 341/12 Lightshow guitar(as seen in the early 1990s Fuji Rickenbacker video - ask Tuck. McGuinn's blue Rick 341/12 is a more-or-less standard 3-pickup Lightshow guitar.

McGuinn's famous custom-wired, slanted-fret 1970 Hall of Fame Rickenbacker 341/12SF Lightshow is still on display at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, at last report. ReferenceThanks to Terry who has forgotten more about The Byrds than I will ever know.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Thanks Peter and to Terry. That is one beautiful guitar. I had heard about the Lightshows back in the 70's when I got my 1st 480. Never saw other than a picture of one until the other night.

I saw the show, too... really cool!

Last month, I saw Roger here in South Florida, on tour with Judy Collins, Richie Havens, and Janis Ian (Janis was - surprisingly, at least to me - a very impressive guitarist! But I digress...)

Roger played that same Lightshow for most of his performance. It was the first time I ever saw one "in person". About 2/3 of the way thru his set, the lights dimmed - and the Lightshow lit up! I yelled out "Woo - hoo!" and started applauding wildly... and then realized I was the only person in the audience who seemed impressed. I felt like turning around and yelling, "What's the matter with you people? It's a friggin' Rick Lightshow, for God's sake!"... but I held myself in check. I hope at least Roger appreciated my enthusiasm.

Happy New Year, everybody!

Anybody got it on tape? Did not see it coming on Letterman at all.
"Here he is, come to pay homage to the Rickenbacker display!" (Said to me by owner Bruce at the "Great House of Guitars" in Rochester, NY)
