Replacement Case for a '73 4001
I'm seriously considering a replacement case for my '73 4001. The old one has the hardware spray-painted black, has a few tacky decals on it and I don't think it's all that strong. Some of the hardware seems like it's loosening and I'm afraid it's going to fail at an inopportune time. Does anyone have a lead on a good period-correct case or am I being overly sensitive to potential resale if I have a replacement? Otherwise, I'd probably get a Ric silver case.
If you think all is going well, you've obviously overlooked something.
Ron, if I can find a used silver case for a decent price, I will sell you one of my black cases. I have about 4 of them, all being used by their basses, so I have to have replacement cases. I really like the silver vintage cases....

Jim Rhoades has a used vintage case for $150.

I haven't seen any cheaper than that.

Buy it before someone else does.
I bought a new silver reissue case, for my bass, from my local dealer last month for $148, before the price increase. I was waiting on a used one since about last Nov., the guy finally emailed me last weekend wanting $168 for it. Duh! My new one (for the bass) stays open but the silver case I got with my 650C won't. It's frustrating.

Relative to a 73 and a 60's bass, the cases at the time were sometime the Fender type where there is an extra couple of inches at the top for the headstock. My 68 has the original case and there is room to spare at the headstock compartment. They come up on E bay often.
Back in the U.K. I have my 64 in a SKB case that was slightly difficult to close but I managed. I'll find out in a couple of months if I pressed too much!

Those silver cases are pretty but not after a couple of months worth of gigging. I'd get a SKB case for it. Old black 70's cases with blue interiors which are pretty sturdy turn up on ebay quite often, I like them and they fit the basses like a glove, the new 4003's are a little too big for them however.
The case for my 72 is a little smaller than they later ones and is not form fitting, it was originally for a 75 4001.
